@cefli replied to your post “that fucking Ecclesiastes 1:18 quote in that'...”:
Whats the quote?
it's Ecclesiastes 1:18. "For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow." it's one of my favorite biblical quotes
Basically Ecclesiastes said that the reality is the more wisdom you gain, the more you will realize about how much pain there is in the world and also how hopeless you will be to actually change all of it, but that's not an inherently bad thing. I'm gonna copy part of a reddit comment actually, dunno if I 100% agree with this reading but I'm tired and stressed so it'll do
But for Kohelet wisdom is important to a good life. Kohelet's basic point is that since everything we do has no real point to it, we need to find out how to balance the physical pleasures with the attainment of wisdom. Take the famous passage on there being a "time for everything" (Ecc 3:1-22). It's often read at funerals, but Kohelet's argument here is that because there is a time for "everything," you need to know how to balance two opposing actions (ie the pursuit of wisdom and the pursuit of the physical). So does increasing one's wisdom increase their sorrow? Yes. But so does increasing their access to the physical pleasures, because all human actions are vain. Kohelet also says "So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me" (2:17). You need to seek a measured approach to both in order to have a good life, but there's no greater meaning to either pursuit.
so it's really really really fucking funny for me to see someone using it as their url who also just unabashedly is proud about being an idiot in general. "world scary so i want to be stupid to never have to confront it"
