16. Favorite meta joke?

The first time I watched the episode I was really excited about Who’s the New Guy? - I immediately made my brother watch it because it reminded me of Community so I thought he’d appreciate it. I also want to say the ‘James Polk was the only president that said he needed four years to accomplish his goals, did that and didn’t run for re-election’ line because I’m not sure it was a reference to the show itself but I really hope it was.

2. Favorite gurlgroup scene?

Probably when they all camp out outside Rebecca’s bedroom door post-suicide attempt, because - my heart!! Followed by the ‘and evah’ scene at the end of 4x05, because - MY HEART!! I didn’t cry during the finale but I fucking bawled during that scene.

7. Biggest laugh?

This is definitely a freshest-in-memory effect, but I think the most I’ve laughed this season was through the majority of 4x10… Nathaniel in particular was on fire and I cackled at basically every word that came out of his mouth, and that refrigerator selfie scene is one of the most entertaining scenes they’ve ever done.

17. Favorite running gag?

Josh and the water cooler. But also preschool/priest school - I’m so delighted that one came back.

18. Favorite callback?

I’ve found a lot of the callbacks really on the nose lately - I don’t find the song references in particular very entertaining because they’re always clunky and kind of at odds with the beautiful way the show can use instrumental callbacks? I’m much more of a fan of narrative and visual parallels - ie Nathaniel’s ‘I’m nice now’ schtick shadowing Rebecca’s ‘I’m a good person’, Rebecca and Paula holding hands etc.

6, 8, 13!

6. Favorite romantic moment?

I’m going to go with Nathaniel’s declaration at the end of 3x11 because the combination of their faces and the swelling music punches me in the gut every time.

8. Biggest aw moment?

’Someone else is singing my song!’ because it’s freshest but what came to mind was also, like, a supercut in my mind of every sweet moment between Rebecca and Josh? Like when he helps her with her party, and when he tells her he’s so glad she moved here after she helps him with his Aloha application, and when he shows her the picture of the table he got for Valencia and she says it’s perfect - just all those really sweet, earnest moments of validation between them.

13. Favorite choreography?

Head in the Clouds and Strip Away My Conscience, because 3x02 was the ep that kept on giving. I’m trying to think of specific moves I love because I know they exist but I’m blanking so hard. Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal (that tapping! especially from the cast proper at the concert) and Love’s Not a Game were also super fun to watch.

4. Favorite character arc? 

Rebecca’s, by a long shot, but second to that I’d have to go with Valencia, even if I think they dropped the ball in the second half. I also really liked the way they originally wrapped up Greg’s arc, which is why I have such mixed feelings about his involvement in season four.

10. Favorite song?

A Diagnosis. To cheat and answer another question in a question ‘take this pill, say this chant, move here for this guy’ is my favourite lyric and it makes me kind of shiver every time, but the whole song is so sweet and hopeful and fun to sing along to, particularly ‘used feathers to peee-eeeet meeee’. 

11. Favorite reprise?

Definitely Rebecca’s Reprise because it gives me All The Feelings, but I’m also partial to the cut Settle For Her reprise.

14. Favorite costume?

Hmm, super hard - as I’m well aware from spending the past couple of weeks narrowing down favourite costumes for paper doll - but I’m going to go with funnily enough one I left out which is the usher costume from Love Kernels, which feels like a boring answer because it’s not exactly an original design but I just?? love?? usher Rebecca?? But also the A Diagnosis yellow dress because it makes my heart happy.

19. Favorite musical theater reference?

Every time Rebecca Bunch disparages Cats because hard same. The scene where she tries to out-Fiddler Sunil also comes to mind.
