atsumu never quite fully healed when you left him. he always puts on a smile and laughs through the pain. his heart has been irreversibly broken, left with the pieces you created.

warning: angst
Atsumu swears he’s fine.
Why wouldn’t he be?
You were nothing more than a silly little fling to him. Merely someone who somehow managed to capture his attention and kept his bed nice and warm during lonely late nights. Your relationship was never going to last and why should that concern Atsumu? He’s a pro-athlete with plenty of adoring fans who would die to spend a single night with him. He has everything he could possibly need: fame, money, women, so why is it that he feels like something is missing? Why is it that he’s still searching for remnants of you in everything?
When Atsumu wakes to the usual incessant shrill of his alarm clock, he loudly groans and rolls over onto his side, grumbling under his breath and reaching out blindly across the mattress. It takes him a moment to realize that there’s nobody there besides himself, the bed sheets are cold and Atsumu withdraws his hand so quickly almost as if it pains him to touch what used to be your side of the bed.
And despite his best efforts, his eyes still scan the crowd before matches, hoping to see you amongst the throng of people. He never does.
He waves off the growing concern of those close to him, plastering on an easy grin and assuring them that he’s never been better. It’s like a weight has been lifted off of his chest with your departure. They’re skeptical, but if Atsumu wants to lie to himself, then so be it.
Atsumu carries on like usual as if your presence in his life never meant anything to him. He’s quick with a joke and a jab, prompting his teammates to roll their eyes and chuckle at his antics. But if they looked closely, they’d be able to notice how strained his smile is and how it never quite reaches his eyes anymore.
Atsumu finds people to fill that space you left in his life, but none of them quite fit like you did.
