Hi!!! Long time lurker! After seeing the ask talking about the trans characters in lumata it made me think, what is gender in lumata? Youve mentioned before about kanzee being a girl but, that "girl" isnt a thing in chunnyik society? Plus Ga'engs sophont type see maleness as immature, so i guess im just curious how gender is perceived in the different types of sophonts!
Humans are very fast and loose about gender, but there’s still bigotry and biases in certain ways because prejudice doesn’t go away it just changes form
Vivenites are very rigid about their eusocial four sex system because to them gender is also a social position, so being trans is seen as like. “Why would you do that what’s the point” or “trying to gang the system.” Ai is lucky to be in a supportive family!
Chunnyiks have a two sex system similar to humans with a carrier sex and an inseminator sex, but little to no sexual dimorphism or social changes besides “who carries the babies in the pouch.” To them, biological sex is only relevant when it comes to making babies, and they forego gender distinctions entirely in favor of merit.
Kroolie also have a two sex system with an egg bearing sex and a fertilizer sex, but the Enokin Empire is very bioessentialist while also stamping down any notions of individuality or gender expression. “Your role is to create new Kroolie under the empire’s holy jurisdiction.” Plus little to no sexual dimorphism goes into that as well.
Chromomorphs are biologically cosexed and express themselves in wildly different ways beyond gender and bounce back and forth.
Milliwyrms have their unique backwards two sex system with the egg-insertion sex and the inseminaor sex being the carriers, sort of like seahorses or Avians in rtts. Their two binary genders are called Rau and Kin, Rau producing the eggs and expected to be leaders and chivalrous and nuturing, and Kin being the receivers who are expected to raise their children and be strong and teachers.
Neasles are cosexed also, and don’t have a concept of gender. By nature they’re solitary but social, only partnering up when it’s time to mate and have babies (two at a time for each.) They raise their children until self sufficiency in their early teens, and then leave their parents. They still visit and have a friendly relationship, but it’s very different from humans.
Harpies are cosex and do not have a concept of gender, but live in big social groups where their “”gender”” is more akin to a social role within a community, like a medic or a hunter or someone who teaches and rears their children.
Celluloids are asexual and reproduce via a mutogenic mitosis process called “pipping.” They don’t have a concept of gender or sex and think other sophonts obsession with it is weird.
D’Jombam are protandrous and are all born “male” (capable of inseminating a female) and become “female” (capable of gestation) later in life. They associate “maleness” with immaturity, and while they’re all female when fully mature, they view it as the adult default and don’t have the same association with human “womanhood” that we do.
