A few weeks ago while the The majority of #CentralAmericans prepared ro begin their #Easter celebration ( #HolyWeek) hundreds of Honduran migrants begun their journey to reach the southwestern border of the United States to seek refuge. The migrants faced a new challenge, the strong presence of police and military personnel in Guatemala as well as harassment by their own country’s authorities. The border protection has moved further south making Guatemala a country where #HonduranMigrants need to hide or else they will be deported back to their homeland. / Hace unas semanas mientras la mayoría de #centroamericanos se preparaba para comenzar su celebración de #Pascua (#SemanaSanta) cientos de #migrantes #hondureños iniciaron su travesía para llegar a la frontera suroeste de Estados Unidos en busca de refugio. Bladimir Muñoz is 21. He had a small business back home in Honduras selling candy and peanuts, until gang-members began extorting and threatening him. “I had to pay ‘taxes’,” he says. “I just want to help my family.” — On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, Bladimir was told he would have to wait one day more before is number came up at the Chaparral entry in Tijuana, Mexico. That afternoon, Number 39 on the list showed up after all, pushing his spot back a bit. He waited the next morning, to wait all over again. “I’m happy, either way,” Bladimir said. “I thank God for the opportunity given to me…It’s almost my turn.” via @longdrivesouth for @lataco. — UPDATE: Since then Bladimir went through a long and rocky journey into the U.S. immigration justice system that had him caged, locked up and transferred to many locations within the States. He described his circumstances as terrible, sad and hopeless, at times missing home. Eventually his lawyer was able to get him a work visa while he waited in New York with his extended family that lives in NYC. He still must check in with his immigration officer and appeal to get refugee status as his visa is only temporary until a decision can be made on his final status or if he will be deported back to Honduras. Currently he is now living in the state of Maryland helping a local christian ministry which provides him with a small stipend for his work, food and living quarters. “They treat me really well here. I am happy to be here. Now I just have to wait and see what is next for me. Hector is seeking asylum along with his partner of two years, Areli Vinya, 37, and her two children (not pictured) to the United States from Honduras, they are a part of the migrant caravans that have come to Tijuana to seek stability in their lives and away from gang violence. A small number of the migrant caravan has been going to get fed near Revolution Avenue in downtown Tijuana by the organization Enclave Caracol, an anarchist group that supports migrant and LGBTTTIQ rights. According to some of the migrants I spoke to there are roughly 30-50 of them who are being helped by trained lawyers who know the ins and outs of the asylum process in the United States. It has roughly been two years now since the arrival of Haitians to Tijuana, which at the time also wanted to migrate to the United States just like the current Central American caravan.
