To say that the two of you waltzed across the floor gracefully for the rest of the night would be a lie.
To say the two of you got jiggy with it wouldn’t be.
You had been able to hold your own when the spotlight was on you, moving minimally in circles within Bobby’s arms, but once that song was over so was the pressure. The lights went back to normal and people started crowding back onto the dance floor as more upbeat songs started playing.
Bobby apparently hand selected the playlist, which meant he was so excited for every song and kept you dancing with him the whole night. You don’t think you’d ever laughed as hard or enjoyed yourself as much as when he showed you a dance he had learned with some of his best friends called ‘Dumb and Dumber.’
He didn’t care that people looked at him like he was crazy: a CEO? Enjoying himself? He just had fun and you could tell he wanted you to have fun, making such a scene himself that you let loose more and more.
So I guess you did dance the night away with him.
After a while though, the room seemed just a tad stuffy. Maybe it was all of the dancing, maybe it was when Stasia and Drizzy tried to cozy up to Bobby. They basically sandwiched him between their purple and green tulle hoop skirts and you took your chance to escape before they could take a good look at you. Sure, you had a mask on, but you also weren’t stupid enough to think they wouldn’t recognize their own roommate if given a moment to really look.
You escaped out the back doors into the outside botanical gardens attached to the museum. Gus had always bragged about how proud he was of the gardens. He’d incorporated replicas of famous monuments from all over the world and included flora as similar to that region as he could get, so it allowed the viewer to travel in their own mind.
You were strolling along a stone path, winding toward the sound of rushing water. When the hedges opened up in front of you, you noticed a grand fountain lit up in the night. You walked up to the edge and stared at your own reflection, only to see what seemed like a stranger looking back at you.
Carefully, you took the mask off, feeling relief when your skin could breathe again as the night air brushed across your warmed cheeks. Looking around, you didn’t notice anyone so you decided to take off your shoes, wrap your skirt up in your hands, and sit on the edge of the fountain with your feet in the cool water.
You positioned the trails of your skirt behind you so they wouldn’t get wet and placed your shoes next to you on your perch. Using your hands as leverage, you leaned back a bit so you could see the crystal starts in the sky. It was peaceful and quiet, until you heard someone clear their throat from the other side of the fountain.
You weren’t as startled as you probably should have been. Maybe you’d expected him to follow you or find you. But there Bobby was, mimicking you across the fountain with his own pair of red chucks sitting next to him - something you hadn’t noticed earlier.
His glasses were pushed back into his hair and his jacket was also laying off to the side. You could tell he was wriggling his feet as you noticed ripples travel across the water to touch you.
“Did you come out here to escape?” he asked, keeping his voice low as if he didn’t want to break the mood of whatever was in the air.
“Maybe.” you said, just as softly. “Does that upset you?”
“That depends,” he said, “on what you were escaping from.”
You turned your face back up to the sky to hide your blush even in the semi-dark. Feeling brave, but not quite brave enough, you spoke your words to the stars instead.
“Not from you.”
He got up then. You could hear the scrape of his jacket against the stone as he picked up his things and the soft pat of his feet on the stone as he walked around the fountain towards you. You could feel his warmth as he sat down next to you, just facing the opposite direction.
“Good.”
And that was all he said.
The two of you sat there in a comfortable silence, listening to the water, hearing the crickets, and watching the fireflies begin to dance like the two of you had at the beginning of the night.
You could feel the fabric of his own button-up shirt brush against your arm as he moved his own, placing his hand on top of yours and twining his fingers around yours, all without a word. You answered him by laying your head on his shoulder, knowing again that nothing had to be said.
It was a weird feeling, how natural it all was. You’d never been into corny romances, never understood how women could call someone “the one,” or how you would ever be able to be so relaxed around another person. But now you did. And you were looking forward to more naturally weird feelings with him.
You don’t know how long the two of you stayed like that. The music was so far away that you couldn’t make out songs, all of them blending together to make it feel like the song and the moment would never end.
But, like all good moments, it was interrupted. Gus came into the garden, yelling your name. It startled you so much that you knocked your own shoes into the fountain.
“Oh no!” you said, moving to pull them out.
“Y/N!” Gus yelled again. “We’ve got to get back! Jack just called and apparently Pumpkin was a borrowed car - borrowed from Lady,” he emphasized.
You knew the night had been too good to be true.
You snatched your keys and took off after Gus’s voice, forgetting all about your shoes.
“Y/N?” a soft voice called from behind you. “Is your name Y/N?”
You skipped backwards to give him a quick nod before you took off around the corner and out of sight.
Maybe if you’d been a bit slower you would’ve noticed Bobby pull your shoes out of the fountain and start to shake them dry. Maybe you would’ve noticed him tracing the initials you wrote on the inside of the tongue. And maybe you would’ve heard him say, “Don’t worry, Y/N. I’ll find you.”
