Cervantis' genes are weaker than my self esteem like what the heck?

Y'know, Amethio was not wrong when he called his father a weak man. Even if Amethio thinking of him as such was at least partially influenced by Gibeon and his distaste for Cervantis, it's really true. Because if the recent episode confirmed anything about Cervantis, it's that he is genuinely a weak man. He's completely spineless.

It's obvious that his spinelessness is why he was a deadbeat in Amethio's life for so long, and why he couldn't stop Spinel from ousting him as CEO of Exceed. And he showed how spineless he is by his words to Liko and her friends by being all defeatist and apologetic, like "I'm sorry I couldn't be much help" and how he kept talking about how powerless he is and how he can't do anything.

It felt really good to see Amethio actually call him out on his spinelessness and cowardice and not mince words about it. Amethio even yelled at him in doing so. Amethio is usually pretty cold and curt in his demeanor even if he does lose his cool sometimes, but this is the first time he outright yells at someone. It seems Cervantis from here is gonna have to learn to stand up on his own two feet and face things head-on instead of running away in fear of facing things.

This is speculation but I wonder if Gibeon could tell that Cervantis was spineless and that's why he didn't like the man very much. I suspect that he wasn't fond of the idea of his beloved daughter Maria marrying such a spineless man. He couldn't palate the idea that Maria would choose him of all people. Yet as this episode confirmed, Gibeon himself was the one who made Cervantis CEO of Exceed, and looking at this I would guess that Gibeon's love for Maria was stronger than whatever reservations he had about Cervantis and his spinelessness. He might have trusted that Maria saw something in him (and perhaps she wasn't wrong, Cervantis is someone who genuinely believed in improving the lives of people and Pokemon), and gave him such a position accordingly.

But yeah, the man is truly spineless, and it was good on Amethio to call him out on it to his face. Actually give Cervantis the strength to take that first step.

Pokemon Horizons Episode 110 Review - The Fearsome Five

I can’t believe we’re already at the climax of the fifth arc! The penultimate episode is a bit subpar in terms of animation, but I am someone who watches Horizons for the plot, so it doesn’t bother me too much; in fact, I am on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next episode to arrive. I really am wondering how everything will wrap up.

The episode is split into two battles, the first with Liko, Roy and Uruto vs The Six Heroes and the second being Dot vs Chalce. The first is a crazy matchup as it’s 3 vs 5 and they’re all forcibly powered up with a stronger version of the Stronger Sphere called the Super Strong Sphere (a lame name, honestly). The second was actually I was hyped up for as Dot finally got her revenge match against Chalce as her first bout with her had been interrupted in Episode 66, which happened to be the penultimate episode of the third arc—that was 44 episodes ago…

The match with the Rising Volt Tacklers against the Six Heroes was crazy, in all honesty. Like, you want them to take on five extremely strong Pokemon while the kids don’t have a fully evolved composed or an evolved team at this point? Heck, Uruto is the only one with a team full of fully evolved Pokemon and he’s struggling hard with them. I think what got me the most curious was that using the Super Strong Sphere caused the Laquium crystals to emerge from their bodies. Does this mean that consuming too much Laquium would form crystals in a Pokemon’s body? And how much is too much? Is it to the point that the Six Heroes are going to die if this keeps up? This is why I am on the edge of my seat. I’m super curious about what’s going to happen to them at the end.

Also, to be honest, I found the animation the most clunky during the Dot vs Agate battle, but like I said before, it doesn’t bother me too much because I know they’re saving the budget for the finale next week. I’m just happy that Dot got her much deserved win against Chalce after 44 episodes. Still, I do like that Dot being separated from the group was intentional for the writers as they wanted a way for her to separate from the group so that she can work with Hamber to rescue Cervantis and also have Tinkaton battle again as Quaxwell was too weak to do so, which is a nice sense of continuity from the previous episode. Hey, at least Tinkaton learned Gigaton Hammer!

Overall, this review is a short one because it’s mainly battling. Still, I do like that the kids are basically using all of their Pokemon in their roster for contribution and they’re using the battle gimmicks they have in their possession. Most of all, I’m curious about Spinel’s intentions and how the kids will be able to conquer this predicament. Stay tuned for this Friday for the finale of Mega Voltage! Looking back, Amethio can be described as having a more positive attachment towards his mom's side of the family while holding very little love for his deadbeat dad.

Amethio always did love Gibeon and his actions were always to prove himself worthy of being Gibeon's grandson and heir. Meanwhile he always openly had a low opinion of Cervantis and evidently doesn't like him very much, calling him a weak man. Cervantis is a deadbeat who is largely absent from Amethio's life and that probably influences why Amethio evidently thinks so lowly of him. He resents Cervantis so much that he considers Hamber more of a father figure, even though the two aren't related by blood.

His attachment to Gibeon comparatively makes more sense when it was later revealed that Amethio's Gibeon lineage comes from his mother's side, since Maria is Gibeon's daughter. We still don't really know much about her but unlike with Cervantis, Amethio still harbors a positive attachment to Maria and even if he doesn't admit it, he still holds onto the memories of the time he did spend with her fondly. That's aside from the fact that it turned out Amethio did actually respect Gibeon for good reasons, namely in that he believed in Gibeon's idea of a better world for people and Pokémon, even if he decided not to agree with him on how. But yeah, he's definitely overall someone who can be described as closer with his mom's side of the family and having positive feelings towards them. How he feels about Maria isn't totally clear, but he most likely did have a good relationship with her when she was alive. She died when he was very young and it seems he ended up becoming attached to the one person from that side of the family who was still alive, his grandfather Gibeon, after losing her.

(On a side note, I kinda wonder if Hamber and Maria became friends at some point during Hamber's adventurer days, since Gibeon spent a good deal of his life confined to a chamber. That feels like one of the more conceivable ways Hamber could've met Gibeon, and could also explain why he became so close with the family to the point of being Gibeon's butler and loyal right-hand man, and later took it upon himself to raise Amethio after Maria's death).

In the upcoming episodes it seems Liko and her friends tried to contact Cervantis and got intercepted by Spinel who decided to set up a trap. If only Amethio knew about it and was around...it might've been different, actually. If Amethio knew Liko was even remotely entertaining the idea of contacting Cervantis he probably would've immediately shot down the idea for three different reasons. One being that he doesn't like his father very much, another being he knows Spinel better than anyone else (Amethio and Spinel know each other almost too well), and another being that he knows Cervantis is in the dark about Spinel's ambitions and thus wouldn't know much anyhow.

I feel like Liko might've acted much differently if she actually knew how Amethio feels about his deadbeat dad. Long ago after they escaped the cave together, he even went out of his way to warn her about Spinel and that the coward is bound to set another trap. Amethio man...you could've stopped her.

Sadly it doesn't seem like Amethio will be anywhere around in the next two episodes since he's still off the radar while reconstructing Zygarde and figuring out what he can do. But man...if he finds out about all this later and that Liko was the one who fell for it all, I don't think he's gonna take it very well.

HZ111 Spoilers

It seems Amethio has reconciled with Cervantis, his father, and he'll be spending time with him off-screen from here on.

Which I am fine with. You cannot undo lost time, or what's been done in the past, but you can always strive to make things better in the future so long as you still have life left in you.

As long as both Cervantis and Amethio are alive, they still have the chance to make things better between them. And so it seems, they shall do so now.

Pokemon Horizons Episode 111 Review - Mega Let Down

I’m really disappointed with how the finale of this arc came to be. Usually, the final episode of an arc would be bombastic and full of crazy twists. While there were some twists presented in this episode, it doesn’t leave the same impact as the previous ones. It’s obvious that this arc was testing the waters to see how a timeskip would work out in the anime. While I wish they were able to showcase more for this arc, I’m sure that they’ll find their footing in the new arc.

While I don’t mind that the Rising Volt Tacklers technically lost in their battle against the Super Strong Sphere-induced Six Heroes, I do wish that the remaining Pokemon that were able to battle put up some sort of a fight before going down. It’s crazy how most of their Pokemon got knocked out in one hit and then the kids’ newly captured mons were the last ones standing. Even when Amethio joined the fight, he didn’t even contribute much. What’s he doing being that one Sailor Moon meme were Tuxedo Mask praises himself for helping out when he didn’t do anything.

Still, I do like that the battle showcases how dangerous the Super Strong Sphere is that it can harm even strong Pokemon like the Six Heroes. If it gets released into society, it’ll definitely be extremely dangerous and Spinel would be covering up the negativity and discourse. It’s crazy how the real enemy is corruption and that Spinel uses it to his advantage. The kids are not strong at their current level and they’re definitely going to need that training arc to power up as much as possible. It really makes me curious about the new arc and what will happen.

There were two small details that I really liked about this finale. The first is that Liko finally has another battling Pokemon in Charcadet. I know that Meowscarada is technically her ace, but with Hattrem being a healer and Pagogo being a more defensive Pokemon, her only offensive Pokemon had been the cat until Charcadet came along. It really does help Liko stay in the fight. Second, I did like how overwhelmed Uruto became because he’s always the type to boast about his strength and how he desires it, but even in a tough situation, he cracks under pressure and it makes him very human.

I do wonder what’s going to happen to Crave and Amethio as it does feel as if they’re fugitives from the Explorers. I do hope that the next time Amethio shows up, his Zygarde will be more useful in battle. Still, I do wonder what Spinel’s ultimate goal is as his masterplan has yet to be revealed.

Overall, the conclusion to this arc made me feel as if they could’ve done more. I just hope that the next arc will be better in terms of execution. I’m honestly excited to see Blueberry Academy. I can’t wait to see what sort of battles the Rising Volt Tacklers will partake in. Also, the Mega Evolution special featuring Roy will be airing on October 10th as part of a mini-arc that’s also counted as part of the Horizons episode count. Pokemon Horizons Episode 104 Review - Castaway Amethio

If you look at the opening sequence, there’s that one shot of a beach basked in twilight. Now that this episode aired, that beach had been foreshadowing Amethio’s location all along! If you think I’m wrong, the beach has Krabby loitering around like in the opening sequence. You can’t deny that it is the same beach! I bet my assumptions will come to fruition once they update the opening next week.

You know, for someone who has been stranded on an abandoned island for a year, Amethio looks unrealistically clean—yes, I know it’s fiction at the end of the day. It’s still crazy to see him still wearing the same clothes he did for a year and not smell putrid, look crusty and haggard—he only ate berries for a year! I guess it makes sense in a way as his appearance does make it look like time has stopped for him for a year after the events of Laqua. When Spinel’s men kept chasing after him to the point that he decided to isolate himself on an island after his submarine crashed, it would be a wise decision to lay low where no one could find you. If the submarine was a part of the Explorers’ technology, wouldn’t it have a tracking device, though?

I do find it a bit odd that Zir and Onia have been searching everywhere for him and didn’t even think about the fact that he’d be on an abandoned island where his family used to go for vacation. Like, this didn’t occur to you guys? You had to make the teenage girl with the giant green cat be the one to solve your problems like in the previous episode? You two have known him longer than her! Then again, I guess it does make sense that they wouldn’t be able to think that he’d be on an abandoned island because it’s not a likely situation they’d think he be in. It also does show that Liko is intelligent to be able to figure this out.

I liked how Liko was the one encouraging Amethio this time around. Back in Episode 65, Amethio was the telling her if she was going to give up. Liko even said the same words he said to her. I liked that role reversal in a way. Liko was also depressed for a year, but she was able to catch her footing again when Roy came into the picture. Amethio just needed that push to keep going, which happened to be Zirc, Onia and the Zygarde Cube in addition to Liko. The battle between Charcadet and Ceruledge was nice. While there was no result, it was a way to reinvigorate Amethio. I also wonder if there will be a rivalry between Charcadet and Ceruledge now…

I liked how Zirc and Onia told the story of how they met Amethio. It’s not a grandiose story or anything—they just joined the Explorers and when they were tasked with looking after Amethio, they weren’t too thrilled, but grew to respect him and swore loyalty towards him. It’s a very realistic situation and I do like that they went with that approach. Though, I would’ve liked to know why Zirc and Onia joined the Explorers. It was still cute to see how thrilled they were to finally find Amethio that they were flung out of the boat. That’s true loyalty right there. I do like that Onia still adores cat Pokemon as she gave food to Meowscarada. She loves cats, whether they be quadruped or bipedal.

Cervantis makes his return and it seems that he has gotten demoted into being head of the warehouse. It must be rather humiliating for him as the company was made by Gibeon and he ran it as his son-in-law. While it does seem like he’s a neglectful father, he does seem to care about his son as he was relieved about Amethio being spotted. I just hope he’ll be okay because he isn’t aware that he’s being watched by Chalce.

Amethio’s late mother’s name is revealed to be Maria. She’s voiced by Yukiyo Fujii who’s known for voicing Sailor Saturn in Sailor Moon Crystal and voiced another character named Maria from Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russian (Sarah Natochenny voices Alya in the English dub). Now that she got a voice and a name, I do wonder what sort of role she’ll play for Amethio’s story. I’d like to learn more about her.

Now that Amethio is integrated into the time skip story now, I can’t wait to see what will happen with his quest to find Zygarde. It was a nice episode overall. I anticipate Spinel’s downfall—let me reiterate that he’s my favorite character. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!
