"We all know I'm better than Katniss in front of the cameras. No one needs to coach me on what to say."
Peeta Mellark, Catching Fire pg 57
King of Sass an Shade.
As @rosegardeninwinter once put it, a sacharrine marriage they will not have. There is not enough fanon that nails this part of his character. If you have reccs drop them in the comments.
"I thought he wanted it, anyway."
Katniss Everdeen, Catching Fire pg 73
I want to back track a bit to the agreement on the public marriage proposal in chapter six. A lot of people take this line as Katniss being cold. That is not true at all. Throughout the series we see Katniss giving away pieces of herself in order to make others happy. She tries to follow Snows directives. She tries to follow Haymitch's guidance. She tries to perform for Effie. She tries to keep up appearances with Prim and her mother. She tries to give Gale what she is able to. This is her thinking she is giving Peeta part of what he wants. No, she doesn't get it because Katniss hasn't experienced the feelings Peeta has. She isn't "there" yet. She cares about him and doesn't want to hurt him but she isn't able to understand how this hurts him. It is not about her being cold, it's about her inexperience with relationships. Remember, this is a girl who didn't even realize she had a friendship going with Madge.
I was talking with @archersandsunsets about when Peeta asks Katniss if that's the only time she's kissed Gale, how now that it's clicked for me that he is actually confirming he was her first kiss, it's less about petty teen jealousy and more about his awe/disbelief and probably some smugness too but also he's realizing she isn't intimate with Gale the way he had been thinking the six months between the Games and the Victory tour but also even prior to the Reaping, cause he thought they had something. Then she brought up a post mockingjay moment of "Real or not real, I was your first kiss." SOMEONE WRITE IT NAOOOOOO!
The infamous only kiss with Gale question. This is a great moment where we get to see Peeta sort of unfiltered even though we are still in Katniss' POV. I totally agree that the question itself is adorably hilarious, even amidst all the insanity they are dealing with he still has to contend with his petty sixteen year old jealousy. Within the context of the entire scene it is revealing and speaks to his character.
Peeta and Katniss have just agreed to be completely honest with one another and he is very quick to utilize this new found promise in order to soothe this thing that has been plaguing him much longer than just the last few hours. The whole six months between he must've tortured himself imagining the two of them together, doing who knows what but it most definitely would involve obsessing over whether she was kissing Gale and behaving with him the way she had in the arena with Peeta. He got a quick and sweet taste of what it is like to be loved by Katniss and then had the rug pulled from underneath him. That's even worse than feelings being unrequited. I digressed.
The question is almost instantaneous. It underscores just how clever our cinnamon roll is. It is a bit manipulative and one could question if he has the right to even ask that regardless of the agreement. We could even question whether Katniss owes him any answer. I think Peeta was utterly shocked and couldn't believe that was the only kiss between them(if he only knew how empty it was!), he states that he knew she had something with Gale prior to the Games. But that's not true. Peeta's so in the dark about her relationship with Gale that all he can do is assume. Katniss, who is woefully out of touch with matters of the heart, is astounded that such a thing could be bothering him at a time like this. I think had she any awareness of how distressing Peeta's position could be, with all the wondering and imagining, she would have cleared it up that nothing was actually happening between her and Gale. Poor Peeta. I'm not sure I can condemn him for using this opportunity to feel a little triumph.
How adorable is Sour Puss Peeta's begrudging "apology"? And then how they try to call it even by saying they both did wrong things! Ugh they are so cute. I need someone to write me an Everlark post-fight Drabble. Canon or AU, doesn't matter. Show us the babies making up like this! (Bonus points for the other kind of making up 😈🔥)
So I'm skimming the books for an ask I'm in the process of replying to and this jumped out at me in chapter 10 when Katniss is apologizing for pushing him after the interview.
"'Doesn't matter', he shrugs. 'Although it's technically illegal.'"
Ok Peeta "Snarky" Mellark, we get it, she already apologized. What cracks me up is when he does it in CF in the attic of D11's Justice Building she does what she does here, doesn't even acknowledge his snap. I can't tell if it's going over her head or she is just ignoring it. What do you think?
Is there any meta on Katniss' dream in Catching Fire of mockingjay Rue?
