"this cannot be happening." you think to yourself, staring up at the ceiling. normally, you would've fallen asleep with ease, letting your dreams take over for the night as your imagination soared.
though tonight, any chance of getting sleep was basically out of the window. beside you slept matthew, deep as ever in his slumber and unluckily for you, snoring absurdly loud.
you tossed and turned, picking your pillow up and hitting him with it a few times in hopes of getting him to stop. any attempt was futile, because he continued to snore beside you as if there wasn't a very tired little next to him.
"mattie?" you tried, to no avail.
"mattie, you gotta stop snoring!" you whisper-yelled. even though you were becoming frustrated, you kept his rule about inside voices in mind. though, did a situation like this call for inside voices? you couldn't tell. not wanting to potentially make him mad, you refrained from screaming directly in his ear.
even though that was really really tempting.
suddenly, a thought popped into your head. you'd woken matt up this way before, all it took was a whisper of the title you call him when you're feeling extra little. as if he were some sort of sleeper agent, he'd wake up immediately if you called him this.
so, you tried.
"daddy?" you said, hoping he'd jump to your attention.
still, absolutely nothing. he continued his lawn mower like snoring next to you. growing angry, you hit him with your pillow three more times before deciding to move to the living room.
"meanie." you mumbled through your paci.
you grabbed your dollie and blanket, quietly trudging to the sofa. none of this was fair to you, mattie was the one snoring, therefore he should be banished to the sofa!
huffing as you tried to make yourself comfortable, turning on cartoons was your only chance at having something to lull you to sleep. when matt wasn't snoring, he sometimes sang you to sleep.

finally, you were dozing off into dreamland. even though you would've preferred to be cuddled up next to mattie instead of having to just cuddle your dollie, it was better than suffering through more comically loud snoring.
and then, someone cleared their throat behind you.
just as you were about to fall asleep.
this made your blood boil.
turning to look at matthew, he stood with his arms crossed and an unamused look on his face.
"why are you up this late? you're supposed to be in bed right now."
now definitely angry and done with following the rules, you pick up the pillow beside you and throw it at his face.
"YOU WOULDN'T SHUT UP!" you yelled, on the verge of tears now. it was way too late for you to be up while regressed, but this was in no way your fault.
matt's expression softened once he saw how distraught you looked, coming over to you and wrapping you in his arms.
"mattie kept snoring so loud! i tried waking you up so many times.." you sniffled.
matthew stifled a giggle, knowing how upset you were. though to him, the situation was just a teeny tiny bit funny.
"aw princess, i'm so sorry!" he kisses the top of your head, still cradling you in his arms.
"how could i be so inconsiderate to my little baby?" matthew whispers, rocking you side to side.
"mattie is such a meanie..." you trailed off.
whatever he was doing was definitely working, because you felt yourself growing more and more sleepy. at some point, you closed your eyes and fell asleep.
matt carried you back to the bedroom and moved you so that you were cuddled against his chest. quietly, he began singing while tracing circles with his fingertips on your skin.
"i love you so much, pretty girl." he whispers.
this time, there was absolutely no snoring. just the sound of matt's heartbeat as you laid against his chest.
