“Easy there kid” Jacob’s gravelly voice cut through the shock, and he settled back into the chair with an embarrassed expression. “Sorry Jacob, I guessed you just startled me.” “Apparently.” And there’s a chuckle in is voice, but the look on his face is a little serious when he settles across from him at the bar. Jacob sets a plate of something yellow and mushy in front of him, and at the first sulfurous wiff Mike can tell it’s the powdered eggs Jacob tried to preserve himself. (How did he even get enough eggs to try? Jacob’s supplier wasn’t very regular, what with her chickens freaking out and refusing to lay every three days.) It’s not the worst thing Jacob has stuck in front of him, so Mike digs in. Jacob doesn’t wait for him to finish before starting. “What is with you kid? I wake up to you thunking around down here, think maybe your working on that car of yours, but no, your just sitting here, drinking all my milk and brooding.” “I’m fine Jacob, just needed to think.” Jacob frowns at him, partially because he knows Mike is lying, and partially because Mike said it through a mouthful of food. “Try again kid.” Mike pauses, swallows a slightly grainy bite before looking around. He’s not sure why, everyone’s gone home, but he just really needs to talk about this, make sure he’s not crazy, just get it out. “Did you see them?” Ok, Déjà vu. In what was probably a fit of silliness, Jacob mimics him, looking around the very empty store suspiciously before cupping his mouth. “See who?” Ok he hadn’t whispered that obnoxiously. He got the picture. “Those boys, the ones that came down in today’s haul, the shy darker one, and the sad looking red head?” Jacob cups his chin, thinking for a moment, before nodding. “Yeah I remember them, what about them?” “Did you see what they did?” Jocob waves him on before freezing suddenly. “Wait, they didn’t steal or nothing did they? Those little punks!” “No! No, it’s not that!” Mike is quick to calm him, before Jacob runs off to run inventory. On everything. He pauses. Looks around again, this time not to check if anyone is there, but because now he’s uncomfortable looking at the older man. Eventually, Jacob clears his throat. “They..” and he swallows hard, forces himself to look Jacob right in the eye. He can feel his face heat up, up to the tips of his ears and down his chest, and one eyebrow on Jacob’s face rises. “They k-ki-… they kissed.” The other eyebrow shoots up to meet its fellow before they both sort of ease back down Jacob’s craggy face and settles into this open, neutral expression. “And?” The old man prompts, like Mike hadn’t said anything huge, like it was the most natural thing in the world. “And? And? You knew about this?!” “About what?” And Jacob is still perfectly calm, still has that expression on his face, like Mike isn’t about two seconds from accidentally smacking Jacob’s face with his hard, wild gestures. “That- That two boys could- would- that they-! That two boys could kiss!” “Girls can do it too, nothing stopping them.” Girls! Girls could… would... Oh man and this just opened up a whole other can of “what the hell” for him. “But why?” Jacob settles back, nodding to himself, like they had finally gotten to the heart of the matter.
