So, I’ve been reading all the theories here on Tumblr these past few days since the new Black Butler chapter dropped. And while many things are up for debate, what’s been bugging me the most isn’t actually Sebastian forgetting Modri.
As someone familiar with the Ars Goetia and general occult lore—and considering just how much Goetic symbolism is present in Black Butler—there are a few things that keep bothering me.
One impression I can’t shake is that Undertaker might actually be trying to save O!Ciel from Sebastian. According to various sources (like Carl Nagel, John Dee, and Crowley), one of the easiest ways to control a demon is to know their true name—along with using sigils, enns, protective wards, and binding circles.
So here’s the thing: wouldn’t it have been easier for Undertaker to just nudge O!Ciel in the direction of ordering Sebastian to reveal his true name? That would, theoretically, grant him full control. And yet, O!Ciel remains weirdly passive on the matter.
Occult knowledge was not unheard of during the Victorian era, especially among the nobility and those with access to private libraries or foreign texts. Even if Crowley himself wasn’t active yet at that time, early occultists like Eliphas Levi and the general rise of spiritualism and esotericism in the 19th century were already creating a foundation. So it’s plausible that Ciel could’ve had access to books or ideas hinting at how demons actually work.
But instead, O!Ciel outright denies the supernatural—just look at his dismissive attitude toward witches in the Emerald Witch Arc.
Of course, one could argue this is simply narrative design—but it still feels strange. Especially since Sebastian actively avoids the topic of his true name, instead choosing to be named after a dog. That’s… telling.
Now, about Modri.
His priest-like appearance is intriguing—many priests, especially those from older scholarly traditions, received formal education in demonology. If Modri really did know Sebastian, there’s a chance he recognized him not by face, but by presence. That kind of intuitive recognition is often mentioned in texts describing interactions with the infernal.
It’s possible Undertaker used Modri—or someone like him—as a vessel to uncover Sebastian’s real identity. A well-trained magician wouldn’t need a contract to perceive who—or what—they’re dealing with. But Modri’s apparent arrogance and short temper may have gotten in the way. And as we know, pride and haste are two things demons love to exploit.
At the end of the day, this is all just an observation based on what I know. I could be completely wrong—and Yana could decide to take the story in a completely different direction. But still, it’s fun to let the symbols speak and the theories flow.
New kuroshitsuji chapter jumpscare at 3am WTF, here we go!
I initially am quite pissed for how short this chapter is, but after rereading for analysis this chapter gives off loads of informations.
Modrivladis: You took everything from me!
Sebastian: I dont even know who you are
"daliance"? "dragged me into the depth of hell"? "i shall use this to remind your body!"? Like, ik and i buy "previous contractor" theory and all logic seems to points to that as far as i can see, but....the wording looks suspiciously....sexy. yeah...
Even bocchan have reached out to the possibilities of this person being a past contractor. Despite sebby saying no, this only stirs up streisand effect to my opinion. This person is goddarn gonna be a past contractor. But for some reason, his "contractor blood" do not have any effect on sebastian. Two possibilities: (1) past/completed contract nullifies and ends relation between contractor and demon, hence no effect (2) bocchan's contract has been taken by faustian as "on going" and priotized over modri's contract. Probably abit of both.
No wait, maybe a third possibility. (3) contract are identified by soul, which modri as a bizzare doll + soul eaten by sebastian, makes his blood be of no difference as a stranger. as always i will give an anology.
The contractor's soul is like one's signature or seal, a prove of identity. All is signed black and white, yes. But talk about the whereabout of said prove...yeah.
The hotel staffs' glance....it unerves me more and more, and rings my bell more too. Their skills and glance just reminds me so much of F.O.L orphanage. In particular, hoffman: theo, hall: artie. Mr rich man's glance is very reminiscent of enraged bd!doll as well.
Also it's comfirmed that sebastian have different faces for each contract, so my previous theory of "sebastian having all the same face all time" is proven wrong. But that makes an even bigger problem: **How did Modri manage to know Sebastian as his past contracted demon If he doesnt even look the same?**
Bocchan: Do you know anyone who happens to have beef with you and are willing to self mutilate to prove a point?
Sebastian: Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?
Sebby sure be making some top tier facial expression/ reaction this chapter XD
