Dysphoria (2025)

This is a repaint of an illustration I first posted right here on this account over a decade ago when I first transitioned. I did this for TDOV this year as a sort of 'then vs now' for myself more than anything. A lot has changed in a decade. I've changed.

A decade ago visibility felt like liberation, but today it feels like a target. A decade ago politicians made a lot of promises to us, and today they can't run away from us fast enough. A decade ago I was crashing out in a dysphoria spiral. Today, in spite of everything, I'm at peace with myself.

It's Pride Month in the States and the Trans community is going through it. Between the Skrmetti decision and the threat of HR1 stripping care from Trans people of ALL ages on Medicaid and ACA plans, Trans people need support more than ever.

So I'm making this illustration available as a print in my shop and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Point of Pride, an organization dedicated to providing financial aid for transition care. I'll post receipts of funds donated at the end of the month.

I'm aiming to raise at least $2000, as that's the amount needed to cover 12 months of telehealth services, prescription medications, lab work, and more for at least one trans person in need of HRT.

Transition care really IS life saving, it saved MY life. I wouldn't have lived to make any of the art that people have told me they love so much. My whole portfolio, all my work over the years, none of it would exist. If my art has ever meant anything to you, please, help.

The legal precident established by Skrmetti will probably stand for quite some time and is a devastating blow to trans youth, but the gender affirming care bans in HR1 have since been struck down for now. Mahmoud v Taylor will further reinforce the erasure of LGBTQIA folks in schools and literature, but Judge Kobick's injunction in Boston will allow many people to get their passports and documentation again. And while most politicians are throwing us under the bus, Zohran just pulled off an unbelievable upset in my city while still unapologetically supporting Trans folks.

This emotional roller coaster is an endless tug of war and the constant threat of one future with the relentless hope for another future is what keeps me waking up every day to keep inching this timeline toward the latter, together with everyone else who isn't resigned to go quietly.

Currently working on these two. Kinda. I haven’t decided on the lighting in the top one yet, I’ve just been messing with some new brushes and experimenting with blending modes.

The first picture is of my Alistairmancer, Rajlin Mahariel. The scene has Raj, ambassador for the new Wycome city council, at Denerim castle protecting king Alistair from a Venatori ambush, 9:42 Dragon. I’m not keen on her hairstyle yet, that will be a little tweaked later. I would like to do a comic of this scene, probably all in greyscale. Someday haha.

Second picture is of Saoirse Hawke and Fenris. She’s not actually hurt, it’s just a symbolic portrait (though I should draw a picture of Fenris picking her up after the battle with the Arishok and calling her foolish. Cool moment for Hawke to walk away from the battle like they do in the game, mine did not ahah! bleeding out in spirit healer). Anyway, I don’t think I, sold on the way Fenris looks, it’s only my second time drawing him. I think….. I also want to show him growing out his hair, so I’ll probably change that (I love him with long hair!)

I’ll be working on the third edition to my Heroes of Thedas portraits soonish. Bet you can’t guess who it is next.
