The word Luffy uses here when he’s telling his crew about the decision he’s made regarding the Merry is 別れる/wakareru. It means ‘to separate/to part with’, but it’s a word almost always used to refer to people- parting ways with a friend or breaking up with a romantic partner. It can also mean ‘to lose,’ as in losing a loved one.

Luffy’s not talking about the Merry like it’s a ship, he’s talking about it like a friend or family member.
