Love is the agreement to work toward a common cause. Even the tiniest birds sacrifice autonomy to cooperate in the mighty task of raising a brood. They solder the bond with tender touches, whispered love songs, elaborate dances, and symbols of the effort they will bring. I watched these two Narrow-billed Woodcreepers tirelessly stock their chicks' mouths with caterpillars in the shadows of the Chaco forest. On one occasion they arrived simultaneously, and paused next to the cavity as if silently discussing who will deliver first.
