beauty box was marketed as a multinational kpop group, similar in a way to blackswan. they debuted september 23, 2021 with the song “rat a tat.”
the original lineup consisted of (in age order): anh, rina, sori (now chanmi), gahyun, sarah, and jerin. of these six girls, anh, rina, sarah, and jerin were non korean.
beauty box had their first comeback on june 27, 2022 with their mini album “b-step.”
“boggle boggle” got a bit of attraction for a nugu group. they peaked at around 15k-20k monthly listeners on spotify which is way more than they currently have. if i recall correctly, they even had a small japan tour during this era.
on november 28, 2022, it was announced that anh was going on a health hiatus.
on the same day, before the announcement, they released an ot5 single titled “higher up.”
during “b-step” era, beauty box participated in a small survival show called dancing-dol stage 2 where they competed against other groups such as ichillin’ and class:y. anh returned for one final performance on this show before continuing her indefinite hiatus.
things take a turn for the worse when, on march 8, 2023, byu entertainment announces that jerin has been “expelled” from the group “due to various reasons”, one being “serious misconduct related to jerin’s visa.”
things get extra extra weird when the literal ceo of the company takes to his personal twitter to shade and threaten jerin?? when jerin was also a minor at this time.
so at this point, wibbonville is in shambles. but here comes yjb to replace both jerin and anh because idols are apparently expendable (no shade to via or chaeeun, im so glad they joined beauty box i just wish it had been under happier circumstances).
chaeeun joined beauty box on may 12, 2023.
on may 29, 2023, the status of anh’s hiatus was finally updated (after 182 days), and it was announced that she had terminated her contract through mutual agreement. in the same post, they also announced that they are working again on the comeback which was postponed (they blame jerin without naming her for the postponement), and that new member via would be joining the group.
so everyone is thinking ‘maybe things are stabilizing finally’ WRONG. boom. another hiatus. double whammy this time too.
on september 20, 2023, it was announced that both sarah and rina (the only two original non korean members remaining) would be going on an indefinite hiatus as well.
in the same announcement, they once again bring up jerin and blame things on her rather than admit a failure of the company. and they also blame the lack of comeback now on sarah and rina as well.
keep in mind, their last release at this point was november 28, 2022. it had been just shy of a year without them.
so now, every single foreign member (which made beauty box a multinational group (that was a big part of their marketing)) has left or been kicked out. suspicious. but you can feel however you want about that. via is now the only non korean member.
beauty box finally returned with a single titled “shine on” on may 7, 2024. 526 days since the release of “higher up.” safe to say all of the hype from “boggle boggle” was dead and buried.
they released their next single album “b-turn” on July 9, 2024, which consists of “shine on” and “come to me.”
this was beauty box’s last release.
on december 2, 2024, chaeeun, sori, and gahyun left the group. this left only via remaining, with rina and sarah’s status in the group still unknown.
by-u entertainment launched a new program called ipic to find new trainees for the new project.
after chaeeun and gahyun teasing a redebut for months, it was announced on april 7, 2025 that they were the first two members of the upcoming girl group arvvy.
on april 18, 2025, it was announced that via had joined na entertainment’s upcoming global group nwhi. this left no one in beauty box, marking their end. sometime since then, by-u entertainment wiped beauty box’s social media profiles of everything (yet still uses the account to promote their new project on their stories). all of their vlogs and fun youtube videos are gone as well. there was never an announcement regarding rina and sarah’s hiatus, but clearly they are not returning (EDIT: as of may 26 2025, the beauty box instagram account has been completely rebranded as a new company account for by-u)
and that is the tragic story of beauty box. by-u entertainment now plans to debut a new girl group but i hate that company with my entire being so i won’t be promoting or supporting anything they produce in the future.
