In the shelter of a garden wall a Chaenomeles japonica (Japanese quince) is producing clusters of bright red cup-shaped flowers much appreciated by pollinators. These can be followed by small aromatic yellow fruits in autumn. This is a thorny, spreading deciduous shrub so care should be taken when considering where it could be planted in the garden or public landscape.
