A lot of fans are upset about the 7 Fates Chako anime adaption because they completely changed Jimin’s character and turned him into a little girl (physically, I guess she’s one of those mystical never aging characters who remains a little girl forever for some reason) and they seemingly gave part of his character plot to Taehyung’s character (sorry I don't actually know the character names). From what I understand, they also turned Jhope’s character into a girl who later turns into a monster. The other characters are similar to their webtoon counterparts but the plot in general is completely changed.

A lot of fans are upset about this because it feels like Jimin and Jhope are not represented in the anime the way the others are, or some people were maybe genuinely attached to Jimin’s character and were disappointed he didn’t get adapted (I am personally disappointed we didn't get to see their anime rendition of 'Jimin' but that's just me). Solos especially think they purposefully erased and excluded Jimin since his character no longer resembles him.

The other reason why particularly PJMs and Jikookers are upset is because it is VERY BL coded (or based on some translations might be an outright BL with suggestive elements, but I can’t confirm because I do not speak Japanese) between Jungkook and Taehyung’s characters. A good chunk (or maybe even the majority) of the animation was focused on their relationship with some very heavy shippy scenes. Jikookers are especially offended by this because from what I understand Jikook's characters were the ones with a close relationship in the webtoon (though not overtly BL coded like this).

Selfishly I’m bothered by the idea of this being turned into a full adaption because I’m scared of the new generation of taekookers it would create. I also personally do feel it’s a tad disrespectful to Taekook if they didn’t sign off on it because those characters are still being officially associated with them and resemble them, but that's just me (and I would feel that way about any ship).

They had some pretty huge names in the anime industry working on this project so ARMY anime fans are really excited about it (as well as taekookers lol). I will say the animation is very beautiful but I'm also just confused on the purpose of this. I thought the webtoon was long over and didn’t have huge interest. Some ARMYs are saying they were fielding for a response before turning it into a full adaption.

This controversy (but also the return of a big anime director) definitely brought it more attention than it probably would have gotten otherwise because most people definitely do not care about Chako. The problem is that a lot of fans associate their webtoon characters with the members themselves (I think it's sort of advertised that way a bit though). If they changed all the characters to no longer resemble the BTS members there wouldn't be such an issue but then that would probably defeat the purpose because that's the only reason why most ARMYs would tune in (or why anyone would bother to adapt it because from what I remember it was a mediocre story).

The whole thing got overblown for sure, but honestly I do not want an official "taekook" AU because of the new fans it would create, but that's selfish on my part.

A few things:

Well, yeah. My only consolation is that this anime doesn't appear to be drawing direct connections between BTS and the anime characters. In fact the changes they've made, appear to be driving home that point even if they left enough of a connection to pull some of the BTS fandom. And yeah the BL direction is just... not it.

This is a more cynical POV, but a friend who doesn't ship opined that HYBE is simply servicing their two largest ship fandoms: jikookers got AYS and taekookers are getting this anime remake. (Never mind that AYS was created directly by the members while Chakho is a third party's third party expression of pure fantasy... but I guess the point can't be dismissed at face value.)

I reckon HYBE licensed this IP to the Cloverworks because the webtoon is over and didn't have huge interest. HYBE already invested into creating the Chakho universe and by all appearances, it was a dud. The Chakho project probably generated a loss and HYBE is looking to capitalize on that IP somehow. Recall HYBE also developed a live action tv show - Begins ≠ Youth - based on BTS's Save Me webtoon, which was itself based on BTS's HYYH era. <- This too was a massive dud.

So the way I see it, HYBE's trying to squeeze out a profit from these IPs they've invested in (to great fanfare in both cases) that have so far generated lackluster results.

It's totally valid for fans who have a problem with Cloverwork's Chakho to voice their objection to the company. Personally, I don't really see any of this as a problem or an issue worth generating a controversy over. But then again, this was how I felt when there was controversy over some of the members' dialogues especially about Jimin in that Seom game. In that case and in this one, it makes sense why people are upset, I just don't feel the same but obviously if positive changes are made then that can only be good.
