what was it like majoring in english?
Honestly, becoming an English major was one of the best decisions in my 20 years of existence because I get to spend my undergraduate years inspecting, discussing, critiquing and writing about my favorite things in the world (books!). I’ve been so lucky to study under brilliant professor who have pushed me to layer theory, structural analysis and close readings atop my longtime love of reading. It has also greatly improved my skills as a writing and as an orator- two skills that I think are an integral part of intellectual life. Pursing a degree in English is also brilliant because I get exposed to different types of literature that I would not have necessarily discovered on my own. Anybody who talks to me about books for more than five minutes will know that I am completely obsessed with Victorian writers and Victorian culture in general. I never would have discovered my favorite literary period if I hadn’t taken Victorian Literature last semester. I also love that I get to study literature from around the world. I don’t know if this is universal but the literary canon that I was taught in high school was very Western centric. At my college I’ve gotten to study literature from a global perspective which I think is really important. In conclusion, being an english major is incredible and I have never regretted my decision once!
If you (or anyone reading this) is considering an english degree pleeeaase come and ask me any questions. Or hmu if you just wanna talk about some books!
