Champion was a Black British gem. The themes of generational trauma, the toxicity of the music industry, the crossover of Black Brum x Black London and the celebration of Jamaican culture made it 1 of a kind.
The soundtrack was immaculateee like the production is a mini love letter to Black British music: grime, UK r&b & dancehall. RAY BLK, Corz, Malcolm Kamulete, Deja J Bowens, Shola Ama, Chi Chi Ching, Pamputtae & Keiren Hamilton-Amos absolutely delivered.
I don't see a lot of people bring this up but Champion gave us not 1 not 2 but *3* darkskin Black sapphic main characters. It meant so much to see Black lesbian & bisexual representation of women that looked like me. Tayo, Honey and Yemi u will always be famous!
Candice Carty Williams chose not to write a s2 but I still count this as the Black British cancellation curse. We'll never know if s2 would've been confirmed anyway. Either way, this was a big big loss but I'll always miss this show & I'm glad it happened. Good luck to Queenie.
