An Exercise To Change Beliefs
1) Write down every single fact about yourself and your life, be it good or bad. These are “facts and beliefs.” Whatever you think of scribble it down. Could be 10 things, could be 10 pages.
2) On a new piece of paper, write “wouldn’t it be nice if...” This is a list of all the things you would like in your life. Use your list of “facts and beliefs” to prompt you if it helps. Eg if you have written ‘I’m a very bad timekeeper,’ you could now write ‘wouldn’t it be nice if I was always on time.’
3) A third list, the ‘lie list.’ This time, write a definitive list of facts about how you would like to be. Your statements should start with ‘I am’, ‘I can’, or ‘I have.’ Always keep your language positive and use words that leave you on no uncertain terms. Use your list of ‘wouldn’t it be nice if...’ list to help you. Eg if you have written ‘wouldn’t it be nice if I was wealthy,’ then you could change that to ‘I am wealthy.’ This list will seem like a list of lies as they do not represent you at this moment. They represent where you want to be. Don’t worry if your goals seem unattainable at the moment, it’s good to dream big.
4) Read it back out loud and make any tweak to make sure they feel right to you. Throw the previous two lists away.
5) On a new piece of paper, write the following statement at the top. Do it neatly as you will be referring to it in the future...
“For the next 5 minutes I will momentarily suspend what I currently believe, and wilfully accept the beliefs that I want. I will pretend that I am under hypnosis, with myself as both hypnotist and subject. For this time, desire and belief will be one. There will be no conflict because I do this willingly. For this period I will completely alter my old beliefs. Even though I sit here quietly, I will act as if the beliefs I want, are mine completely.”
Underneath this paragraph, write down the ‘lie list’ you just created.
This document represents a vessel for transformation in your life. It will aid you to switch all the negative beliefs with new, positive ones. All you need to do is read this list for 5 minutes a day. Some stipulations to ensure your success:
- Try to read it first thing in the morning as it sets up your whole day.
- Read it aloud. It’s easier to stay focussed.
- Try and create a feeling. Feeling the way you would feel as if the words you say are true. Repeating the words parrot fashion is ok, but creating an associated feeling would be amazing.
- Do this every day until all your lies are reality
