The final design for (some of) the main characters of Changing Tune, Queen Genie on the left, and her advisor/friend Bluebell on the right!
Genie was the first original character I made for this AU, and she has changed a lot in that time. She used to be silver with white wild hair that was held in a ponytail by a bright pink or yellow scrunchie (I could never decide), or I thought of making her yellow, in the end I decided on making her green with red hair.
Originally the story of Changing Tune was going to be about all the adults of the Pop tribe sending their children away on that last Trollstice and staying behind to distract the bergens. Genie was Peppy's niece (daughter of his sister) and therefore in charge of the children, as well as the one who would protect their string. In this AU having the string taken from them would turn all the adults grey and make them inedible.
I couldn't make that story idea work though, so it got thrown away. I may try to reuse elements of it in a different story, but Changing Tune will be going in a slightly different direction. The only similarity is that Genie is still Peppy's niece, but even then she isn't one by blood anymore, instead she's the daughter of his sister in law, not his sister by blood.
Here are some other references of her, they're pretty similar and I don't know where my first ever drawing of her is, but you can still see a few changes:
I decided to put her hair in a bun because I thought it gave her a more distinct silhouette (and for Lore reasons I can't mention yet), but the early concepts I had of her bun were both too hard to replicate, and felt too detailed for the style I was going for, so I changed it. Not only do the looping shapes make it easy to tell what kind of style the hair is in, but the heart shape is super cute! I also gave her those distinctive wavy fringe bits because I thought it would be cool to link Genie with her cousins, who both have fringes that they clearly got from their mother thanks to Peppy's lack of any fringe at all.
I picked the colour of her dress on a whim, because I felt like orange/yellow just went with her skin and hair, but I did change the style of the dress a few times. I knew I wanted something with short sleeves, and some pattern on it, but I couldn't decide on how that was supposed to look.
I honestly didn't put much thought into Bluebell's appearance, aside from her skin and hair colour, I didn't have any clear ideas of how I wanted her to look. In fact, the first drawing I did of her was only a few pages before this one, and she looks basically the same (I just realised I forgot their Hug-Time bracelets in the top pic). I did take a lot of her looks from things I saw people give Branch in their designs, like the fluff in her hair and the moles on her face, because she and Branch end up having a close relationship I thought it would be cute (he's not as isolated in this AU for many reasons, but he does still keep many of his survivalist and paranoid traits).
Here's the first sketch of her, an old and a young picture of her:
So yeah, I don't have much else to say about these two at the moment, but I'll be talking about them and other characters more later.
