another Changling Au ficlet
John had not been upset when Daniel had announced he would be spending the night away from the Freehold. Well, no more upset then he normally was anytime Daniel made plans that did not involve the both of them naked. So maybe had pouted slightly when Daniel told him that there was some kind of seminar thingy that Daniel wanted to attend that night and, as it wouldn’t be over until late, Daniel was just going to spend the night at his apartment.
Still, he hadn’t really been upset. He understood about Daniel’s job and not wanting to drive all the way back to the Freehold. While he and Daniel hadn’t spent a night apart since they’d become lovers, it was hardly the first time he’d slept alone. So he’d kissed Daniel good-bye and gone about his day perfectly fine.
It wasn’t until after supper that he’d started to feel restless. Normally he and Daniel spent their evenings together. Even before Daniel had finally accepted his offer, they’d taken to spending time together. Now he found himself wandering about, unable to settle. He was irritated by the time he crawled into his lonely bed.
Two hours later, he was beyond irritated, and now also exhausted. What was wrong with him? He was in love with Daniel, but he’d thought himself with others before. It had never bothered him when he slept apart from any of them. What was different about Daniel?
Did he miss the sex? Well sure, but he’d gone without sex before. Of course sex with Daniel was exceptionally good, maybe even the best he’d ever experienced. Was it just he was feeling horny? Well he could take care of that.
Ten extremely unsatisfying minutes later, John gave up. He was tired, frustrated and...and lonely. He missed Daniel. He missed having that sweet warm body beside his. He missed the gentle sounds of his breathing. He missed being able to cuddle close and bury his nose in Daniel’s soft hair.
While he was absolutely sure it was pathetic, he still rolled out of bed and got dressed. He took one of the cars and drove across town. It was after 2am when he finally knocked on Daniel’s door.
The door opened and there was Daniel in a robe and pajamas blinking up at him. John can’t stop himself from wrapping his arms around his lover and holding tight.
“I couldn’t sleep.” He confesses, pressing his face into his lover’s hair.
“Me either.” He hears Daniel say. Surprised, John looks up. A half-drunk cup of tea is on a small table with a lit reading lamp. A book lays open on the chair beside it. He hadn’t woken Daniel.
“Oh,” John isn’t sure what to say.
“Come to bed.” Daniel locks the apartment door and leads John into the bedroom. The disarranged covers show that Daniel too had attempted to rest but had given it up as hopeless. John strips down to his boxers while Daniel slips off his robe. They crawl into bed and into each other’s arms.
“I love you.” John whispers as he closes his eyes and gives himself to sleep.
