A Taste of Pakistan: My Experience at Khokha Eatery Ottawa
Just discovered the most incredible hidden gem in Ottawa! Khokha Eatery is tucked away on Longfields Drive, and I'm honestly kicking myself for not finding it sooner.
Walking in, I was immediately struck by the vibrant colors and warm atmosphere. The walls are decorated with traditional Pakistani truck art, and colorful kites hang from the ceiling—little touches that made me feel transported halfway across the world before I even tasted the food.
I started with their famous Chapli Kebab, and oh my god?? These humble-looking patties are apparently the "king of kebabs" from northern Pakistan, and I can see why! The tender ground beef was perfectly spiced with what I learned are authentic Peshawari spices. Each bite had this incredible depth of flavor I've never experienced before. The owner later told me they refuse to freeze their kebabs in bulk and make them fresh every couple days—and you can absolutely taste the difference.
For my main, I tried the Chicken Biryani which came with this beautifully fluffy basmati rice layered with pieces of tender chicken. The caramelized onions on top added this perfect sweet crunch that balanced everything. They serve it with raita (a yogurt mix) that you can pour over to taste, which was the perfect cooling element.
I couldn't resist getting the Butter Chicken Poutine as a side (when in Canada, right?). It's this genius fusion dish where they replace regular gravy with their butter chicken sauce over crispy fries with cheese curds. The sauce had this subtle sweetness from honey that offset the spice perfectly.
To finish, I had their Kheer—a traditional rice pudding with cardamom and rose petals. It was delicate and not too sweet, just enough to satisfy my sweet tooth without being overwhelming.
What really made my experience special was chatting with Zermina, one of the owners. She told me how she and her husband fell in love as teenagers in Pakistan before making Canada their home thirty years ago. Khokha started as a way to share their passion for cooking with others, and that love is evident in every single dish.
The restaurant itself isn't huge—just 18 seats inside and some additional seating outside during warmer months—but that only adds to its charm. It feels like being welcomed into someone's home rather than just another restaurant.
If you're looking for authentic Pakistani flavors that will transport your taste buds across the globe, you've got to check out Khokha Eatery. Trust me, your Instagram will thank you for the colorful food pics, but your soul will thank you even more for the experience.
