As he rang the bell, the door practically flung open and Don was standing there, harried and still in his work uniform.
“Hello,” Loki breathed, “I…went out.”
“Where did you go?” Don said, visibly unwinding from the shoulders down, “Loki, I thought you’d…I really thought you’d left.”
“I was waylaid having a moment of reflection just in the woods,” Loki struggled to push out a faint laugh.
“You’ve been gone for hours then because I’ve been home since five and it’s now seven thirty,” Don said.
He stepped out of the way to let Loki back in and closed the door softly behind the both of them.
Dinner was waiting, sadly poised on the table where two places were set and Don’s was half-eaten.
Loki’s plate was there, untouched, but the food was still in the serving dishes.
Loki’s heart tripped.
Don had thought he was gone and yet there was his place at the table, waiting for him should he come back.
Loki’s eyes started to burn.
At one point, he was unsure he would come back.
A strong and sure pull had tugged his feet back towards Don’s home, a silver string of fate leading back to this.
His place in the world.
Loki blinked rapidly to clear his vision and hide the evidence and turned to find Don poised with his hands on his hips.
“What-“
“Please don’t worry me like that,” Don deadpanned, “You could’ve left a note.”
Loki prickled, “A note? Be serious Don-“
“It's considerate. How would I know what had happened to you if you didn’t come back?” Don raised his brows.
Loki’s muscles twitched, fighting the urge to run again.
“I don’t ‘leave notes’. I can handle leaving the house and not getting caught. I’m not a child,” Loki said.
Don sighed through his nose, “I’m not treating you like a child.”
“Then why does it feel like it?” Loki snapped lamely.
Don rolled his eyes at him and Loki’s jaw locked.
“Are you going to argue with me or accept that I was just worried?” Don said.
“That depends on the length of the lecture,” Loki crossed his arms.
Don threw his hands up, “Grow up, Loki.”
Smarted by the barbed response, Loki scoffed, “You grow up! You’re acting like a prison warden!”
“And you’re acting like a spoiled teenager, even though you’re what? Hundreds of years old?” Don snapped.
