One For All is a crystallization of power... someone that possesses a 'Quirk'... For example, if young Todoroki were to inherit it, he would become a superhero with half-cold, half-hot abilities and superhuman power.”
PRESENT MIC ‘Otagai HERO-ke shusshin no ELITE taiketsu da! Īda Tenya tai Todoroki Shōto! !’ プレゼントマイク「お互いヒーロー家出身のエリート対決だ!飯田天哉対轟焦凍!!」 Present Mic “It's a showdown between elites who come from hero families! Īda Tenya vs. Todoroki Shōto!!”

If he's using fire now, he'll be forced to make a choice. In that case!! Recipro Burst!! It'll take about 10 seconds for the engine to stop! In that time) I'll finish him!”

I only showed wide-range attacks... so you should have completely missed about these kinds of tricks, right? I was on guard, but the Recipro, I couldn't dodge it, as expected...............”

Observation notes:
We have a discussion between All Might and Midoriya in which Shōto comes up twice, the first time when Midoriya thinks at how everyone is fighting with all they have (which kind of feel ironic as HE was the one who forced Shōto to do so), the second is when All Might mentions how Shōto would have been amazing if he had inherited One for All... but All Might has decided for Midoriya now because he too was born Quirkless and so he believes Midoriya AND ONLY MIDORIYA has something special in himself so he is not going to demand from Midoriya to hand One for All to Shōto.
Now I get Midoriya has self worth issues but why should Shōto want All Might’s Quirk when he has his own which is already pretty strong? We aren’t yet in a desperate situation so that we need a strong Hero to face the strongest Villain and anyway One for All has the downside it breaks the bones of who uses it so it would be more of a pain that a help for Shōto (or anyone else) to accept it at the moment.
And honestly I find particularly bad to talk about Shōto in this case because the idea a super strong Quirk is needed and we can’t just leave One for All to Midoriya but it needs to be passed to someone who has also a strong Quirk reinforces the idea Enji was right all along in trying to create a kid with a strong DUAL Quirk.
Midoriya, wanting to give One for All to someone else, is also trying to create a person with a dual Quirk. With the consent of said person, yes, but still he too seems to value a lot the idea to create the strongest Hero... so really, I guess Horikoshi wanted to represent him as modest and humble but it kind of backfire badly after we saw Shōto’s backstory.
Going on, here we have the match between Shōto and Īda in which Shōto goes back refusing to use his fire and, to be honest, handles things just fine with his ice. Yes, Īda managed to hit him and almost drag him out of the ring but Shōto was never in true danger to end up out of the ring because he iced Īda’s engine before the latter grabbed him.
On a sidenote... yes, this is another case of something that gets revealed only afterward for surprise value (remember how in the cavalry battle this happened more than once, concluding with how Tokoyami managed to steal Shōto’s headband without anyone noticing?).
Yes, it is possible to speculate Shōto’s hand touching and icing Īda’s engines is behind the balloon, it is still something that gets revealed later for shock value, no one in the audience supposedly noticing it, not even Īda until it is too late.
I am not overly fond of this narrative trick but here it does not seem a big deal. It will get much worse later in the story when it will be used to hide bigger and more important things in the late arcs of the series, sometimes being also used to create cliffhangers.
On another note Enji watches the match and is not pleased with how Shōto doesn’t want to use his fire even if the match ends up with Shōto’s victory.
This time though, as far as we know, he won’t go to him later to complain about it.
Places notes:
The chapter mentions a location:
Hosu-shi (保須市 “Hosu City”) in (west) Tokyo in which Ingenium is attacked by Stain, the police finding him and requesting for immediate backup.
Hosu-shi (保須市 “Hosu City”) likely take its names from planet Hoth (ホス ‘Hosu’), a “Star Wars” planet, remote and icy, on which Luke Skywalker after having been captured by a wampa and, using the power of the Force, managing to get his hands on his lightsaber, free himself and sever the wampa’s right arm, had a vision that told him to go search for Yoda on Dagobah.
Tokyo is actually a metropolis (東京都 ‘Tōkyō-to’) composed of 23 "Special Wards" (特別区 ‘tokubetsu-ku’ —often referred to simply as ‘ku’) and ‘Tōkyō-to seibu’ (東京都西部 “Western Tokyo”) or ‘Tama chiiki’ (多摩地域 “Tama Area”), which contains 26 cities (市 ‘shi’), 3 towns (町 ‘machi’), and 1 village (村 ‘mura’). The 23 special wards act as autonomous cities with mayors and assemblies, functioning together as the urban core, while the rest are separate, smaller cities within the metropolitan prefecture.
Hosu is therefore meant to be either the new name of one of the 26 cities or a new city in west Tokyo.
In Chap 50 we will be told that in order to go from Kōfu city in the Yamanashi Prefecture to Shibuya in Tokyo with the Shinkansen (新幹線 “new main line”), a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan, one would have to pass through Hosu.
Retcon notes:
In chap. 304 it will be revealed that one of the previous owners of One for All died of old age after owning such Quirk for only 18 years. All Might will come to believe this was because, if One for All will be given to a person with a Quirk, this would drastically reduce that person’s lifespan. This, though, won’t be a cause of concern for a long time through the story, apparently because All Might didn’t wonder about it earlier, only worrying about the past users when this could be useful for the plot.
Translation notes:
Enji calls Shōto ‘Bakamono-me’ (馬鹿者め). ‘Baka’ (馬鹿/ばか/バカ) literally means “horse deer” and is an ateji, which means either the readings of the individual kanji do not match the reading of the word, or the meanings of the individual kanji do not match the meaning of the word. The etymology is uncertain. Some say it could be from a Chinese idiom “point at a deer and call it a horse”, other say it derives from a Sanskrit word meaning “fool”. ‘Mono’ (者) means “someone/person”. Enji also adds to it ‘me’ (め) which adds a annoyed/frustrated tone to the word.
Weirdness notes:
Īda stops abruptly in his run, the implication being it is due to his pipe being clogged, which seems to imply without them he can’t move his legs... considering later in the story Īda will rip his pipes and wait for them to regrow I don’t know how he did manage to walk in the meantime.
Shōto claims Īda didn’t expect him to ice his pipes because he only saw him doing big attacks... too bad in the previous match he iced Midoriya’s arm in the same way he iced Īda’s pipes so yeah, Īda should have remembered.
Episode 24 - Fight on, Īda (飯田くんファイト Īda-kun FIGHT)
Added parts notes:
It is minor but when Present Mic introduces Īda and Shōto for each introduction they add him specifying how they are from the Hero course. This choice implies also how the anime found this more important than saying their class.
After the start Shōto immediately attacks Īda like in the manga and so the anime adds Īda thinking Shōto does not plan to give him any time. The anime also stretches their battle so that Shōto manages to use his ice to encircle Īda, Present Mic pointing out how he was surrounded and, with Shōto’s next attack, how he was going for the win. Only at this point Īda jumps over his ice like he did in the manga.
Changed parts notes:
Instead than having ‘the kids fighting with all they have’ shown behind Midoriya like in the manga, the anime preferred to show flashbacks from the past episodes of when it happened.
Shōto’s image as All Might talks of giving All for One to him is also a lot cooler in the anime than in the manga.
Also it is not really a Shōto related change but in the anime all the finalists are shown, including Bakugō while in the manga we only had Shōto, Īda and Tokoyami.
In the manga Īda thinks his strategy after the battle has started while in the anime he does so before the start is given. Honestly it makes more sense.
In the manga it is the audience that comments on Īda’s kick while in the anime is the boys from class A.
After Shōto is hit by Īda’s kick Enji thinks at how Shōto told him he will have to think if forgetting about him or not was a good thing. In the anime Enji remembers it after Shōto wins and then he comments on how he is still confused and being a fool. Basically the anime tried to string together more these two sentences, but here the comments seems to be born by how Shōto is looking at his left, while in the manga it is a clear reference on how Shōto wasn’t using his fire which lead him to be hit.
Also in the manga Enji is sitting among the spectators while in the anime he is still standing apart from them.
