Coppers & Robbers

We have a short chapter this week and one that's largely devoted to one very important reveal that'll be the bulk of what we focus on. But before we get there I did like this little bit of setup to frame what we're about to see and potentially hint at where this scene will end up. As we're exploring the castle the Romance Dawn trio + some loser come across the summoning circle the God's Knights used.

While it's great to see Luffy recognizing it, especially when we know Shamrock & Gunko plan to call for reinforcements, I also really like what Road has to say here. Yeah...we've seen this circle used by ordinary folk to summon a demon. A panty-loving musical skeletal type of demon. While this is going on though they get startled by a voice calling out...

Ahh! It's a weird old guy in a Hawaiian shirt! No, seriously it is the long-speculated theory that the man from the cape drinking with Crocus was none other than Scopper Gaban. Roger's left-hand man who earned the title "Mountain Eater" due to his penchant for sizeable women. Don't listen to the family-friendly story they tell at the party, it didn't even take five minutes after meeting this man for Luffy to imagine a future version of Sanji.

The Minister of Love makes an immediate impact. It also seems like that scar is very flame shaped so maybe this is who Kid was seeking out? Either way, Gaban recognized Luffy right away and fitting for his outfit mentions right off the bat how much he'd like to go back to Wano. So that's worth keeping in your noodle.

What makes Gaban interesting is how nebulous he is about everything going on. He wants to talk to Luffy about the consequences of freeing Loki, but he also says he loves the idea of others stirring up trouble. He helps them find the secret passage they're looking for. But after all that...

He still wants to test Luffy. This is really interesting all things considered. Very cool that Scopper like Rayleigh appears when we're searching for a key to free someone. But where Ray just instantly subverted the need to free Caime, Gaban gets in the way after trying to express the full stakes of what Luffy wants to do. Which fits with what we see of him and Roger. The idea here being he wants Luffy to think it through. Consider the consequences he's ignoring. It's a serious crime to free Loki, even thieves that plundered the treasure hoard left that key alone.

But he could have just not told them. Scopper doesn't seem entirely against the idea of freeing Loki. He just wants to ensure Luffy can handle what may result from it. This is very deeply in our wheelhouse. It's not even subtle about the idea we're dealing with Luffy's impulsive streak. So I'm definitely ready to see how this unfolds. If our fight gets interrupted by another of God's Knights and what Gaban may have to say if and when he's satisfied by his test. Not just about Elbaf but about all the things he could potentially get into. Wano, the 4th Road Poneglpyh, hints about the One Piece and how Nika may tie into it. Realistically I feel like that's a big element of what he wants here. Push Luffy enough he can see G5 for himself. I also wonder how much more this meeting can parallel the one with Rayleigh back on Sabaody. Will Luffy refuse information again?

Mi Kasa Es Su Kasa

Okay, this chapter was so much fun. A whirlwind introduction to another member of Roger's crew! I like him already. He's an enabler of chaos. Chopper and Scopper bonding over each having a Wano hat. Please let it happen. Would also be a blast to see Shakky, Ripley, Rayleigh, and Gaban to all be in the same place.

Zoro has one of Oden's blades and Nami has one of Big Mom's Homies, think Scopper will recognize either and bring up his adventures together with Oden or encounters with Big Mom?

I wonder when he began dressing this way. Is this a Tama teaching Ace to make kasa hats situation? Who taught Gaban I wonder. I hope it was Kiku.

And with this reveal, I am very interested in the potential of seeing the few hours that Roger’s crew were in Wano. It seems those few hours left a lasting impression on Gaban, and Shanks was there then too. Learning more about his past would also tie in nicely here.

So Scopper Gaban officially showed up (Ohara, the theorist, is gonna be so happy) and is immediately represented as a Sanji parallel.

And then we also get this pannel:

And as we all know, Zoro is directly paralleled by Rayleigh (swordsmen, chest scars, eye cars, drimking, "Dark King", etc.)

And to me, this indirectly confirms (via Scopper / Rayleigh vs Sanji / Zoro) parallels once more that ZORO IS THE VICE CAPTAIN OF THE STRAW HATS!

(I know irl he would not take this position since the vice captain has to be a kind of organiser which is clearly more Nami's job, but within the world of One Piece this does not matter nearly as much)

I try to keep the scans when I can, cos' they have T/N such as the one that says Scopper Gyaban should be transliterated as such, because ya-san, or sama, I guess (or maybe Sir-ya) is his nickname on Elbaf, drawing from Gyaban. I didn't know before. The wiki clearly has it as スコッパー・ギャバン (Sukoppa Gyaban) though. The gya etc. transliterations can be tricky though. Edited in (Feb 8): The Gya is here: ギ(gi) combined with a small ヤ (ya) =gya (ギャ). [I saw someone saying it was only written with ギ, but if that were the case it would be Giban]. Anyhoo...Sometimes gya, etc. is transliterated ga. It's not a big one, but the joke probably is lost.

Also the Roger Pirates member that has /had looks that I dig. And left-hand man of Roger, eh? Glad we're getting some more lore.

Reading back on the chapters with Oden, it's obvious that he is. Glad the old timers still have a strong role to play! Looks like Loki's gonna wreak some kinda vengeance soon, cos' Luffy won't lose against Scopper, I think. But, who knows?
