Upon rereading these interactions in 919 and 1140, I'm more confident in my comparison of Kiku and Mr. Ya here.
Both want to learn the true intent of people from overseas they just met, and the ruins of an abandoned castle are visited in both scenarios.
Also, why are u so rude to the nice lady, Law? You're the outsider here, chill my guy. You're gonna have to eat bread as punishment if you continue this behavior.
Well...he kinda does. The fight for the key is on! And while it goes about like I expected, with Scopper pulling back right as Gear 5 comes out, there was something very important in this brief clash. Teasing Luffy about the hat and Shanks. Bruh, remember all that growth you supposedly had about your brother's death? You fell for the exact same thing. And if you could chill out a bit you would have realized this dude would actually know a lot more about Shanks than you did.
That's what I noticed about the bulk of this brief scrap with Scopper. Luffy was getting played just like he's being really impulsive about this key. But...he did convince Gyaban he's strong enough to be responsible for his actions so he ends up getting it. Not before giving us this hilarious panel of getting it shoved in his mouth though which I appreciate.
Moving on though, while it is somewhat agonizing to delay what will likely be the most interesting part of this arc I like seeing how the Minister of Love moves on from the fight. He's proving to be very different than Rayleigh and hints that Shanks has been hyping this kid up a lot. Wouldn't surprise me if he did to Crocus at some point either. Gyaban's more skeptical, which works when he comes at a point Luffy is one of the most prominent pirates in the rapidly changing world order.
Gyaban has seen what he wanted to, he knows something is about to go down, he's capricious enough to hang back and see how Luffy handles it. Scopper's appeared. We know he's here. It sure looks like he;s ready to bow out and wait for the denouement.
And fittingly we see the arrival. Which gets some time to play out and have a bit of presence. Quite fun. I love the dude being summoned in his underwear. Never change One Piece. Especially with Gunko getting embarrassed. Don't make me like the Celestial Dragons y'all! But it does make sense that the ones we saw around Sabaody were the ones who just want to root in decadence. It makes sense some are like these that mix ambition with all that privilege. There's still all types in Mariejois too. I actually like taking the time to show that.
The Knights are ready to open up on Elbaf. But it's weird Shamrock gets pulled back from it. Like, from a why are we holding him back perspective. They'll start messing with things while Luffy is away. Probably not the best thing in the world to be throwing Loki on the fire. This really does seem to be on the brink of chaos not just following Luffy but him really causing a lot for no good reason. If he was at the party the God's Knights probably wouldn't be able to do as much damage. Hope it goes well but it's looking more and more like it won't.
This will age terribly when this guy inevitably does thr most evil thing you can imagine but I like his silly design
[ID: Panel from One Piece of an anthropomorphic serpentine dragon with a space helmet. Their bio says: "Caballeros Sagrados (Miembro de la familia Remoschiff) Saint Qilingham." And they're saying "Esto es malo. Esto es terriblemente malo. Estoy retrasado. ¡Llegaré tarde! Estaba medio dormido... ¡Pero recuerdo que me encomendaron una misión!". /END ID]
Gaban really said "King of the Pirates? You seem more like King of the Yap to me!" Him giving out unsolicited fashion advice to Luffy is also hilarious.
Gaban: Forget it. Somebody's going to die.
Luffy and Zoro: Oh yeah? Who would that be?
Gaban: Me.
I’m really glad to see that these new Holy Knights have silly personality traits, and aren’t stoic monotone guys like Shamrock. Curious to learn more about their connection to Harald as well.
A few days have passed since reading chapter 1140, time for the usual in depth thoughts on some of the specifics.
Gaban wanting to keep Luffy in the dark about his connection to Roger was an interesting choice I feel. I like it though. If Luffy wasn't letting himself get so upset by Gaban joking around, he may be able to figure out who he is. Zoro seems to be connecting some dots, though he remains silent.
Luffy and Zoro have heard that Collun's dad is a former pirate, both know he has a connection to Shanks, and that he's traveled around Wano. There are only so many people who can check all of those boxes.
Luffy may be slow to put things together, though I feel he is capable of it. Just not when he's angry like he is with Gaban joking around.
However, Luffy has developed a good sense of when not to pry into people's business, which he doesn't say out loud, but he does restrain himself.
Compared to Zoro during early Wano, where by saying what he is thinking, is risking losing the trust of a new ally who wanted to keep her connection to Oden a secret, lest any of Kaido's crew catch word of it.
If Gaban had a reason to not trust Luffy's crew, he wouldn't have given him the key, same as how Crocus wouldn't have given the Log Pose to Nami if he didn't trust the group. Zoro not speaking up after remembering that Collun said his dad was a pirate was a smart move.
1169's first page is up on the Japanese site, and it's exactly what I have been waiting for.
Gaban getting more focus. He has been woefully out of the spotlight for most of this flashback thus far but no longer!
Translation by me. I made a mistake with the part where Shanks is talking about Roger's son but everything else is correct as far as I'm aware.
I love how much this conveys about Gaban's perspective, him stating that heritage does not always define a person's future. And how that relates to Shanks, to Ace, to Ida's sons, potentially himself, to Oden, and many more.
As well as enjoying Gaban being skeptical about ideas of fate and destiny. Both as a contrast to Rayleigh, and due to Gaban wanting to get to know Luffy himself, while deciding to not let Shanks' words paint his own views of Luffy as an individual. It has me curious what Gaban meant when he referred to Shanks as a "child of fate."
Then him saying that Shanks and Buggy the sons of the Roger Pirates has me thinking of Ida viewing Loki as her son just as much as she views Hajrudin as her son. Gaban's point about people subverting the expectations of their birthright makes me wonder if that will be true for Hajrudin and Loki too. Someone other than either of them may be involved in helping Elbaph as a whole to learn to both value the library & school, and their warrior's pride. Lots to be excited about from just the first page.
Snicker. Seriously Who's Who? Where did you get the comically large dartboard? How did you get this set up so fast? How is this intended to accomplish anything? When are our intrepid heroes going to crash this party?
I figured we'd have something about Page One/Ulti from last time. I did not have Ulti strapped to a comically oversized dartboard as the way this was gonna go. Seriously bro, like I can respect the skill to have all those narrow misses. Between the legs is diabolical. And props to Ulti for being sassy in this predicament. But my lord dude...this is cartoonishly evil.
I enjoyed writing that mini-analysis about the dynamics of Doflamingo & Monet compared to Luffy & Robin's, so here's another. About Kaido, Who's Who, and the Giant Warrior Pirates this time. Including points from the current arc/chapter(1140) at the time of posting.
In kidnapping both citizens of Wano and former members of Kaido's crew, is Who's Who imitating the "ogre" part of Kaido's attitude? That led him to shunning friendship, and saying that "ogres" can't live alongside humans?
That could also thematically tie into Harald's motivation to separate from the brutish ways of the past. Regardless of what Harald's other potential motives were, he did remove his horns to symbolize moving away from violence.
True or not, could the reputation of Dorry and Brogy be part of Harald's motivation for removing his horns? It's not all that different from the reputation that Loki has within Elbaf. Dorry and Brogy's epithets and the word Kaido uses for "ogre" both include the kanji 鬼 which means oni, which further ties together some similar aspects of Giant/Ancient Giant culture as well.
