The Shuggy discourse resurfacing after the latest chapter is so funny to me, like...should Gaban have said "you and Buggy were like a son and a Son-in-Law to us" or something 😭😭😭😭

Damnn i know i said i hate shuggy fandom but new chapter i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy. Rip shace shippers even more. Though tbh CANON wise im not upset because its really cute that shanks is so happy and now its canon that roger and rayleigh saw them as their sons instead of just "apprentice". Happy for them. Shace and Shuggy fandom Im sorry about that though. Maybe you guys can turn this around to make some angst art or something about them breaking the status quo?? Idk ;;
Inheritance
It's 100% intentional Shanks looks so much like Sabo here, right? This is an absolutely adorable moment, you know it's true but it is still sweet to hear it. And I know you dirty, dirty fujoshi out there love the way the line can be interpreted as just Gaban & Roger raising kids in a loving old man yaoi partnership. I wanna really focus on Gaban's line here for a sec...but can I say something about that tree? It doesn't look like Elbaf's typical ones. Big shaggy Christmas tree pines. That twisty little juniper is specifically the one you see all over Ringo. I did a quick check to see and no it's not common in Elbaf but I'm just making a note before I do a proper re-read.
But Gaban's line, damn. That has a lot of impact doesn't it? Because he's so right about Ace saying it. It makes you think of Kuina and Oden and many others. Maybe none more than Shanks at this point. There's some truth to it as well. It's one of Luffy's strengths. The fact he just kinda drifts. One reason a lot of chosen ones fail is because they're too hung up on what old world ideas of success look like. Just a good peek at Gaban's philosophy and I like it.
Realistically, there isn't much more for me to say about this one. It's mostly spelling out stuff we already knew or covered last week. But this was cute.
1169's first page is up on the Japanese site, and it's exactly what I have been waiting for.
Gaban getting more focus. He has been woefully out of the spotlight for most of this flashback thus far but no longer!
Translation by me. I made a mistake with the part where Shanks is talking about Roger's son but everything else is correct as far as I'm aware.
I love how much this conveys about Gaban's perspective, him stating that heritage does not always define a person's future. And how that relates to Shanks, to Ace, to Ida's sons, potentially himself, to Oden, and many more.
As well as enjoying Gaban being skeptical about ideas of fate and destiny. Both as a contrast to Rayleigh, and due to Gaban wanting to get to know Luffy himself, while deciding to not let Shanks' words paint his own views of Luffy as an individual. It has me curious what Gaban meant when he referred to Shanks as a "child of fate."
Then him saying that Shanks and Buggy the sons of the Roger Pirates has me thinking of Ida viewing Loki as her son just as much as she views Hajrudin as her son. Gaban's point about people subverting the expectations of their birthright makes me wonder if that will be true for Hajrudin and Loki too. Someone other than either of them may be involved in helping Elbaph as a whole to learn to both value the library & school, and their warrior's pride. Lots to be excited about from just the first page.
AHHHH! Shanks found out about Ace 14 years ago already!! (When Ace was the world's grumpiest 10-year old I think??)
