One Piece 1174 first thoughts.

A simpler chapter this week, I like it. Things are progressing about as expected. That said, Collun's family and the kids and their families continue to be the best part of this arc. They are all so kind and brave.

I love all of the scenes with the kids and their families and with Ange.

And seeing Elbaf becoming more and more on the nose about imitating parts of Wano is super interesting. I'm curious to see what it is all building up to.

If I had a nickel for every time Luffy flew up into battle on an heir to the throne of a warrior nation, who has pink as a prominent part of their color scheme and a dragon devil fruit, to fight someone who was present for the God Valley Incident, I'd have two nickels...

Some disparate thoughts to round this post off.

This makes me curious if Zoan devil fruits are always the same size when the user is transformed. Momo and Kaido were the same size as full dragons, but Kaido is much larger than even adult Momo. If Leo had Loki's devil fruit, would he be just as large as Loki in dragon form?

While I love the art for each of these, a few other scenes from Zou-Wano I would have enjoyed as potential double spreads would be the reveal of Zunesha, the reveal of Road Poneglyphs, Zunesha destroying Jack's fleet, Luffy's "I've always been free, and now this place is mine" in Udon prison, Luffy and Momo confronting Kaido, Luffy awakening his devil fruit, Oden holding his retainers when he's in the the oil, something from Bad End Musical, something from Big Mom's flashback.

And a goofy situation crossed my mind. Imagine Lilith sees Loki next chapter, then says. "I forgot to mention, I made this clone of his devil fruit. It's flawed though. It's neon green instead of black(?)"

Actually, One Piece chapter 1174 is an excellent example of why I won't be watching the anime when it comes back because if I have to hear those sweet babies cry out for their family thinking it's all their fault, I'm literally not gonna make it

Dr. Rice Cracker (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Loki)

Big title for a big chapter and while I have a nagging suspicion I made that same reference with Egghead...meh, don't care. Here we go with our big turning point for Elbaf and there's no one better than this certified creep Sommers to really set the mood for our big ending. Oh my god this dude is next-level of disgusting for the Celestial Dragons which I unironically love. It'd be a perfectly acceptable route to take establishing the World Nobles as mostly hedonistic sludge but the ones with drive and ambition have some higher virtues.

Nah, it's all sick pleasure and entertainment for them. At least for Sommers. Kirinham or however we're romanizing that one this week at least seemed to have some reservations. But you gotta love the top-quality evil we're getting out of Sommers. Getting giddy at beautiful deaths (reminds me of a certain pair people whined about not dying), justifying it because eh...Imu has to sweep it under the rug if they fucked up. It's like everything has to be so jaded and cynical and multifaceted recently or we have villains I want to invite to the rotation like York so you get excited seeing a true scumbag we all hate. Let's all say it once together before going further. Fuck this guy!

Where this really gets heartbreaking though is the kids' reactions. And there is definitely an escalation between a ship taking you somewhere unpleasant your loved ones can still rescue you from and plopping off a cliff. The kids naturally start getting scared, even Colón seen here in flashback displaying his spoils of battle, and honestly the direction they take is just heartbreaking.

I think it actually says something about these kids who grew up in a peaceful context. How quick they are to blame themselves for trivial spats with their parents. How resigned they are to hopelessness. You could think about Doffy's dramatic speech during the Marineford battle but also Ashura Doji's explanation of the Sunacchi call. How people who value their lives too highly become afraid to take risks. There's definitely a lot of truth in that, which sets us up perfectly for...

Dawwwwwwwwwwww, even whack-ass Road gets in on the big schmaltzy scene. You can tell just looking at him the little brother is a total cool kid, he's got the Rizz. Knows how to Skibidi the 6-7 or whatever's hip in Middle School at the moment.

Seriously, very touching scene of everyone coming to the kids. It's irrational but it just makes sense. Ripley also gets a great one, love Miss Ange & Johanna. Legitimately made me tear up. Starmaking moment for the already great Ripley and I'm coming around on Road but he's still a creep who started the arc undressing Nami. Without even paying! And luckily of course the day is saved by the arrival of a...

MASSIVE FUCKING DRAGON!! Holy shit this thing is just absolutely, monstrously humongulous. That's Giant Luffy right now, right? He stretched out so much for his Rice Cracker Belly (which is hilarious) to catch a bunch of literal giants, right? And of course we're fulfilling an ancient prophecy, the chapter wasn't exactly called "Two Pretty Strong Blokes, Ain't They?"

Sometimes you just gotta love something because it is heckin' awesome. Though I do think this sets our conflict and stakes pretty well. Like I said last time, the two biggest allied threats weren't even involved yet and the situation was getting under control. Elbaf had enough of a warrior spirit they're willing to take their stand through the hostages. So it feels a lot more like we're maybe gonna take the "restraint" angle. Using that thread of like, Dressrosa's ruin and trying to preserve parts of Wano still standing. We've obviously got the firepower, can Elbaf survive or is it so far gone they'll need to begin again from zero?

I think this look suits Loki and his mischievous personality, but I wanted to see what he would look like more serpentine, to fit also with his trickster personality.
