father figure
Law, rightfully, should be pissed off if he ever learnt that Vergo’s true identity was hidden at Punk Hazard to protect the morale of G5 marines, especially if Vergo somehow miraculously reappears (the wiki has him as deceased). Though maybe Smoker and Tashigi relayed the betrayal to the higher-ups. Law loses his father figure, but the marines keep theirs. Plus, the children. A monster is remembered honourably, and a reasonably honourable man* is portrayed as a monster. Extra angst points—Vergo was obliquely sent to Swallow Island (and ended up on Minion, the place of Cora’s death) by Sengoku (or the unit he was transferred to was). *up for debate
The panel above is from chapter 764, White Monster, Cora and Law’s backstory. Sounds like a good premise for a fan fiction? You’re not wrong. Try this one: Father Figure. T-Rating, AO3, 2,312 words.
