Headcanon that Hijikata reminded Gintoki of Takasugi before he went mad. There are some obvious similarities between two (they have similar appearances, they both smoke, and they have a rivalry with Gintoki) so there's no way Gintoki did not think this at least once. Helping Hijikata through losing Mitsuba was probably extremely personal for Gintoki, because he did not want to lose Hijikata to grief like he did with Takasugi regarding Shoyo sensei.
