It is fully black. She can see nothing but can hear her mum. Trying to speak to her, she forms the words in her mind but cannot say them. Where is she? She remembers sneaking out but then nothing else. Again, she tries to form a question.
“Mum, where am I? Where is the light?” Both stay in her mind.
Listening, she tries to hear what her mum is saying. Maybe she will get some information there.
“You must come back, Faith. Please my darling. We need you.”
“Mum, I want to. Tell me where I am. I will come back if you tell me where I am.”
“Mrs. Fraser?”
A new voice. She tries to listen.
“Dr. Grant. Please, is there news?”
“As you know, her cerebral edema has been treated with mannitol…”
“Yes?” She hears the impatience in her mum's voice and feels the same. What was the doctor saying? Wait, was she in hospital? But then where are the lights?
“As her brain swelling hasn't improved nor her coma lessened, the next step is a craniectomy.”
A deep sigh. Faith can't tell whether it comes from her mum or herself. Both. She is in a coma. What happened when… she still can't recall.
“I feared as much. Please, do what you must do. I need my child back.”
“We will schedule the surgery later today. I will have the paperwork brought in.”
“Thank you. If we can get her awake then we can start to deal with her paralysis.”
“Surgery!” Faith thinks, “they are going to cut into my head. Wait, what paralysis!”
