“You will be careful?” She is preparing for the expedition and looks up from storing another gun in her rucksack.
“ Of course.”
He blows his breath out, his shaky hand pressing against his heart. “Not just for you but for the bairn. I know that it’s father isn’t… and I don’t know if you would, ah, see to it, if you could. There is no one here but me and I have never, will never, and ah, putting yourself in a bit of danger might take care of it…”
She closes her rucksack and walks over to him. His stumbling speech is stopped by her fingers over his lips. “It’s daddy is you and I will protect it with all that is in me.” She vows.
He breaths against her fingers. “Thank you.”
Danny waits, his own rucksack over his shoulder. Jamie walks over to him. “I know she can look after herself. But” his hand goes up and his eyes narrow “if you do anything to cause her harm, I will find you and I will bury you “
Danny swallows hard and nods. “I will have her back, I swear. There are two few people left in the world, I will do nothing to endanger one of the only two remaining.”
“Good.” He let’s his tension drain some. He won’t feel completely at ease until she returns. Safe and sound.
Danny slips away to give them a moment of priivacy
“You see to Mary and the baby.” She reminds him of his obligations. He nods, placing his forehead against his.
“I will. You see to yourself and the bairn.”
“I shall. When we return, we will have a long delayed wedding night.” He swallows harder at her words. They stand there, breathing in each other as long as they can.
“I love you Mrs. Fraser.”
“I love you Dr. Fraser.”
She moves away, picks up her rucksack, and heads towards the exit. They don oxygen masks, just in case, and head out.
