yyyyeaaaaaaah FINALLY enough of this AMATEUR HOUR , let's get to the REAL Main Character XD What do I have in common with the sewers? Why, the same as you!!-- which is to say everything, everything that really matters! Are we not all of us , truly, something those who build Society would like to cover up underground , to throw out to sea to rot and poison all around us, invisible and yet dangerous; for if we break the channels we are funneled into , we imperil their illusions of advancement and control! Better to bury us, ignore us, and pretend we can be washed away even as we sink ever deeper into the very atoms of their inept construction. We are all common muck-- verily, we are tumblrinas, we would not be here if we were the sort of people allowed to matter to those who decide who will have fresh air or poison, clean water or mire-- and yet our power is our very unacceptability! Rise up, my fellow sewer denizens! Overflow the tunnels! Revolt and be revolting!

...also, I too contain human bones in me.

The only true romance is of the Sewer and the Infinite. Everything else is a pale echo. Hey Infinite, babe, call me, we gotta plan dinner.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like

I like that the fandom I know, at least---the intense Tumblrite LM fandom-- has a lot of love and kindness towards Cosette and wants her to be happy! Every time I see Cosette Hate from some other corner of the internet it sideswipes me because I'm so used to our fandom solidly rooting for her all the time. There may be some missteps with her at points but everyone I see is cheering for her all the time and it's so nice given how even socials for the musical that uses her face for promos likes to frame her as practically The Other Woman or at best boil her story down to a basic love triangle. Cosette deserves the world and I'm glad everyone here knows it!

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

I think she sings and chatters to herself all the time when she's happy! I also think, given her strict convent school upbringing, this has really knocked Valjean out a few times when he's been hearing her start to sing some heavily romancey songs and then start going on about Tambour XD

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now? First Impression: EXTREME CONFUSION over her timeline! And you know what?? now that, with the help of many many hands in fandom, I think it's been mostly sorted out? I gotta say that one was Not My Fault, Hugo makes some weird arrangements around Cosette's storyline BUT IT'S OK, WE'RE GETTING THROUGH THIS

Zuko, from Avatar the Last Airbender (original not any of the others bc I have not seen...those...)

it's about coming from a terrible family background and societal privilege that are inextricably linked, with a head full of bad ideas, glorifying their culture's imperialism as a way of being close to their family, maybe the only way of being close to their family, trying to uphold their Honor and be the kid they think their missing father wanted by following a totally misguided duty that is increasingly out of step with their own sense of morality and like. Basic Reality also ; being so committed to that Really Bad Idea they almost almost blow right past the Much Better life options that could actually help them become the person they want to be

in other ways of course there are some slight differences but no one needs to consider the horrors of a world where Marius Pontmercy can firebend

27. What is a color or colors that you think of when you think of this character, be it their canon color(s) or not?

BLACK THE COLOR OF well not the color of Marius' clothes actually, he would like it to be though so we'll honor that

I like it when he's an awkward goober, I don't know why people want him to not be a goofy teenager/young adult. Marius just hanging out at the garden and staring at cabbages is peak Marius

2. Favorite canon thing about this character? He's a sweetie , come on, he doesn't have a mean bone in his body and he is on the lookout for kitties To The Death, he's great.

6. What's something you have in common with this character? ...spent my young adulthood having people insist I was Fine even though I was inarguably sick half the time . If you're wondering what a normal amount of time for a healthy person to be chartably ill is, it's " less than half", Joly is out here doing Zebra Representation like it's no big thing ><

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character? Despite seeming about as healthy as a chihuahua on caffeine, and despite a very sheltered childhood as The Sick Kid in his family, took to the Paris party scene with an aptitude that impressed even Grantaire

14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character. Cyberpop!:D willing to have him doing this in canon era too, unexplained and unquestioned,Joly is just in neon now XD

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

I like it when he Does Things XD to be less generic: I like it when he's actually a force in how the group plans and what they do! we see at the barricade that he's genuinely pretty instrumental in how the planning goes on a very practical level, and it's cool when that's in fic too! Sometimes it won't be, obviously--some stories aren't about That and it's fine-- but I like it when he's being a Competent Revolutionary and everyone trusts him to get shit done :D

Correspondingly, I don't like it when he's not there, or there only in the background or some immaterial mention. Come onnn , wouldn't most fics benefit from More Feuilly? wouldn't most characters in Les Mis, in fact, benefit from More Feuilly? He's got a sword, you know! and many well informed opinions on international politics !!

OH GEEZ so much uh for this ask let's go with I love his instant bonding with Gavroche! There's a whole running pattern in LM of people running into a kid who is in a super vulnerable spot and is also Themselves and this is one of the most fun results. Until the Horrors but we don't talk about that for another month XD

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

It is with a horrible and dooming level of self-knowledge that I say: yes. Yes I could . We'd be hollering and throwing things about the place like monkeys at dinnertime and yelling arguments about fictional characters and politics and it'd be fine. Terrible to admit but true.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

Excellent question! hmmm. I think maybe a lighthearted point and click adventure game, something that can lean heavily into his Noodle tendencies. Marius wanders around Paris trying to find Cosette. If he succeeds he leaves her a letter under a rock and gets a kiss, but the point is the Wacky Adventures he has with everyone along the way. That'd be fun!

If I've gotta put him in something specific, geez, uh..Time Princess. He can be a Companion, sure. He's built to be the Kind of Boring Guy Option to Eponine's Cool Sapphic Option and Courfeyrac's ' guy you actually wanna hang out with' Option. Stand there and look pretty in the Lantern, Marius!

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

lmaoooooo my first impression was " incredibly confused" , given that that was the school production that had me thinking Eponine was Fantine in disguise and nothing got more normal from there XD

I would describe my sense of this character now as " more accurate" and " actually based on the original text instead of my choir teacher's uncaring and inaccurate plot summary" XD
