Explain your Preference for Layers
Character Debates: Kevin Price vs Arnold Cunningham
Who’s the best?
There's always that ONE great line from a character that makes you keep loving them, even if most of the other fandom hate them.
Like Elena Gilbert for example.
She divides the fandom in two - some love her, some hate her.
I will love her until the show ends because of one line. And it was to do with an episode I rewatched the other day - 2x21. Easily the saddest episode of TVD. Elena had just lost John. She'd watched Jenna die, helpless to do anything, and of course, she'd been through a damn sacrifice ritual, which is enough to traumatise anyone right?
And it's that scene with Jeremy where one of her most selfless lines comes from.
"I'm sorry that you lost so many people."
She's not focusing on her own loss right at that moment. She's thinking about Jeremy. About how he's had to go through a lot of loss in that short space of time. About how he has lost Vicki, Anna, their parents, and now Jenna and John. She's still trying to work her own way through losing two sets of parents in a short space of time, but still she says that line, and I just...that is the line I go back to when I start to question where the character of Elena is even going.
She's selfless in intent. Whether that always comes across or not is debatable, but she's also human (or was). She's not perfect - which character, speaking from an unbiased point of view, is? - but that's the line which for me sealed my love for her.
I loved her anyway, but you know. I really love that line. It's not particularly significant, but I loved that it was something Jeremy needed to hear, and he responded by saying "I still have you." Hands down, best Jeremy/Elena moment on the show.
So, I'm curious. What lines of your fave characters have cemented your love for them, despite anything else they may have done?
I am curious, so if anyone responds to this please share because I think it's nice to debate about stuff on the show that isn't always about the triangle, or about ship wars etc. :)
