By the way once you finish reading The Secret History you start being haunted by the memory of Henry in the same way all the characters are. Doesn't even matter if you hated him or loved him he will just be there with you forever now
I have so many thoughts about Henry Winter.
I think about how he showed signs of suicidal ideation from the beginning of the book, and how he bonded with Richard because of that.
I think about how, despite being called unfeeling, he showed the most sympathy to the most vulnerable characters during their hard times.
I think about how he left Richard his car, or how he kissed Camilla as a way to say goodbye.
I think about him at Bunnyās funeral.
He makes me sick.
did you know?
all of richardās character in the secret history is foreshadowed at the very beginning. āĆ” moi. lāhistoire dāune de mes folies.ā (page 5)
the quote is from a french poem āa season in hellā
angsty teenage rimbaudās descent into complete mental turmoil, self-annihilation and revolt from the ennui of bourgeois society.
sounds familiar?
Also worth noting that Richard compares himself to Arthur Rimbaud while cutting his hair ^^
āThe Secret History is so Lana Del Rey!ā exclaims the romanticist. āThe Secret History is so Ethel Cain,ā says the realist.
YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU CAN HANDLE CRITIQUE. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU CAN EMBRACE BEING TOLD YOU WERE WRONG. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH UNPLEASANT TASKS. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU CAN DELIVER DISAPPOINTING NEWS. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU KNOW HOW TO BE DISAGREED WITH. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU CAN BE CORRECTED. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU CAN BE TOLD YOU MESSED UP. YOU ARE A REGULAR GUY. YOU ARE ABLE TO DO HARD THINGS.
This specific passage always makes me laugh, partially because thatās exactly what the Greek class did for the bacchanal, but also because, even after a decade, Richard wonāt accept(or maybe hasnāt realized) the fact that the Greek class was most definitely a cult itself.
If Richard Papen had stayed in California, thereās a comically large chance he wouldāve joined Scientology at some point.
My hot take & theory of the day is that I 100% believe that Julian groomed the twins into sleeping with each other, which is supported by the Greek class seemingly finding it hot and the role incestuous relationships had in Ancient Greek and Roman society.
Elaborating on this post and my long winded rant in the tags because yāall seem to be interesting in this take!
I covered the Camilla/Charles rape theory a while ago, and Iām linking the post here because I feel like I expressed my thoughts a lot better there than in the tags.
As for Julian, his relationship with the Greek class, and sexual coercion in cults: Julian was known for being inappropriate with previous students. Georges Laforgue all but outright tells Richard this as plainly as possible.
I think this is the real root of why Laforgue dislikes Henry so heavily. Henry, although heās also a victim of Julian, has so much influence over the group. Henry picked up a lot of traits from Julian even down to the pen he writes with.
Itās almost outright stated that every member of the Greek class had an innapropriate relationship with Julian, especially Henry. Julian isolated them from the outside world, and manipulated the ancient world to suit his views(and by extension, the Greek class). ā This includes the twins, and the way the Greek class perceives them in general, among other things.
Every member came from a home with a strained familial relationship. Julian saw this, took advantage of it, and used that as an opportunity to mold them into who he wanted them to be. When the consequences of this caught up to him, he fled and no one suspected a thing.
He was a rich, white āeducatedā professor, and rural Vermont(and New England in general for that matter) has been known to be extremely white and by extension extremely racist. The people would rather believe a local manās made up tale about a man of color to pin the murder on before theyād look in front of them and see what was clearly there all along.
Iād even go as far as to say Julian and the Greek class arenāt nearly as brilliant as people make them out to be. Theyāre wealthy and white. Thatās the biggest reason why they got away with what they did, and why Julian got away with everything he did.
as an AuDHDer i actually hate the Act of reading (slow, requires prolonged focus) but I love REreading and I LOVE LOVE LOVE talking about something i've just read. i love dissecting and analysing and critiquing it. but first i have to read it. and the expiry date on my fixation on a book can be anything from 1 day to 10 years
also important to note, if i am not fixated on one for any amount of time my soul dies. so i basically have to be reading always lest i wither

that 'glamorous philosopher' post is exactly why i choose to be irreverent and flip about everything even if it's considered 'cringe' or 'gauche' bc i dont want my genuine autistic obsession with philosophy to be mistaken for LARP. also philosophers deserve to be ridiculed do you know how downright perverse these motherfuckers are
the elites (snobbish redditors) dont want u to call plato's dialogues rpf bc it will delegitimise their air of superiority and there is absolutely no other form of dividend in existence for learning ancient greek

Betrayed and backstabbed by your scheming evil advisor? Psch. Skill issue. Absolute amateur problem. Just hire two of them and reward them for snitching on each other. Just make sure that neither of them is gay or they'll just end up hate-fucking each other and fucking you over all the same.
"hire two evil advisors but make sure neither of them is gay" are you hearing yourself right now. be serious
trinity santos is not even mean. "let female characters be mean!!!" sure but she is literally not even mean
no one says big mood anymore. no one even says mood. no one says anything. all thats left is a dry wind, that scours my face until i bleed
