I’m still learning that liking traditionally feminine things is not a bad thing, and that’s okay. There are too many people in this world who think being a woman is degrading, and it showed a lot in my upbringing, even when I didn’t notice, and even when I did, and didn’t say anything for fear of being instantly shut down. So even though I’m feeling kind of weird and guilty and amazed and delighted all at once at putting on something pink and wearing makeup, I know that it’s just a product of my environment growing up. A product of being surrounded by people who made me think that “being like other girls” is bad, because the problem was never being the same as other girls. It was being a girl.
