I’m the kind of person who likes to be by herself. To put a finer point on it, I’m the type of person who doesn’t find it painful to be alone. I find spending an hour or two every day walking alone, not speaking to anyone, as well as four or five hours alone at my desk, to be neither difficult nor boring. I’ve had this tendency ever since I was young, when, given a choice, I much preferred reading books on my own or concentrating on a project or listening to music over being with someone else. I could always think of things to do by myself.

Season 3 Character Highlight - 3 Things

Character: TK Strand

Favorite 3 scenes:

3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: The proposal was beyond anything I could have come up with. It was absolutely perfect and I wouldn’t change a single second of it. The way his smile didn’t leave his face, the way he never doubted the way Carlos would answer.

3x15 “Clown Down”: I love all of the Tarlos scenes in this episode, but my favorite TK moment is when he realizes that Lou has escaped so he tries to distract Carlos, nearly successful until the Lizard decided he wanted to be on Carlos too.

3x08 “In the Unlikely Event of an Emergency”: It’s hard to pinpoint one scene to highlight, but the scene with Gwyn on the plane, after drinking in the bathroom and then when he grabs onto her hand in the “Amen” montage. My second choice would be the scenes with Carlos, both at the loft and on the tarmac.

Favorite 3 lines: funny, heartfelt, or ridiculous

3x08 “In the unlikely Event of an Emergency”: “I have to stay here, mom. They need me. Plus, look at me, I'm fine. I'm a firefighter, mom. I save lives.”

3x12 “Negative Space”: “He’s stalking a stalker and he brought a date” & “At least our fire insurance is up to date since last time he pissed off a maniac our entire place burned to the ground.”

3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: “It’s not drama, it’s love. The kind that you can’t get away from.” The whole scene was amazing, but this part, the part where TK acknowledges that the love they share is something that is meant to be. “The love that I feel is infinitely more powerful than the fear of losing it” is a very close runner up.

Favorite 3 dynamics:

Carlos: The connection between these 2 was clear from the beginning, but has surpassed any expectations I could have had. They balance each other out, they love freely, they make each other better. We got lucky with the casting in this show.

Nancy: Nancy is the sister he never had, never knew he wanted, but now doesn’t know what he would so without. She is the #Tarlos Fan. She calls him on his shit, which is needed, but also shows that she pays attention to what he doesn’t say as much as what he does – ex: getting Carlos to the hospital at the end of 3x02.

Fire Fam: The relationships he has formed with Paul, Marjan, and Mateo is very different than the one he has with Judd, but equally important. The will scene in the firehouse is a great representation of his relationships with Marjan, Paul, Mateo, & Nancy. Judd is more of a older brother he never had, someone that he actually looks up to, but also trusts to not let TK’s head get too big/keep him rooted in reality.

3 things we learned:

Name:  We learned that the Tyler portion of his name came from an uncle that died as a child. This makes me way more curious on the Kennedy middle name now.

History:  We learned that his drug addiction was more than just opioid pills, but heroin as well & that Gwyn made him go to a rehab in California in 2017, which was more recent than I had thought it was.

How much like his parents he really is:  He is very used to self-sabotage (just like Owen) and tends to blow things up & run (Both Owen & Gwyn here). The difference is, now, TK wants to be different, he wants to stop running.

3 hopes for season 4:

Less trauma for one season – I know this one is a long shot, but really give the guy a break. NO hospital beds for 1 season, that is all I ask (but don’t expect – they seem to love hurting him)

A worry-free wedding – Lets save the drama for the honeymoon or their return. Let the actual wedding go off without a hitch.

Healing in his relationship with Owen – Owen has a pretty decent relationship with everyone, apart from his son. Season 1 – they were great, season 2 – he reminded me so much of my own father, I hated him (with a few exceptions), Season 3 was an improvement, but they didn’t have a scene of just the 2 of them from 3x08 until 3x18.

Dakota Sorrel

Dakota is a three-quarters orc, assassin rogue, and former resident of a small village at the southern tip of the continent of Khamil. He once served the goddess Ithar as a cleric, but following the death of his little brother, Dakota abandoned his faith and his village, and forged a new path.

Forge, however, might be a generous term. He drifts, from one place to another, refusing to take root, or place loyalties, or build bonds. He’s tangentially attached to the Thieves’ Guild, and makes his coin by the occasional act of thievery, and by offering his services as a seamster. In particularly rough times, he has been known to take an assassination contract or two.

At first glance, some might take him for a full-blooded orc, though his stature suggests otherwise. The child of a half-orc and an orc, Dakota exists somewhere between the two, and while his size puts him at a disadvantage for sneaking around, it does mean people underestimate his ability to hide in the shadows. He wields a short sword, and carries a half-dozen cheap daggers for throwing when he needs. His connection with Ithar lingers, but Dakota ignores it, and would sooner die than call upon her for aid.

Dakota doesn’t know the term for what he is, and the idea of connecting to other people makes him uneasy. Friends are fine, but lovers disinterest him, sex in particular. Unable to understand how to forge a romance without the addition of sexual interaction has left Dakota feeling he is broken and better off alone, rather than struggle through explaining his discomfort to a potential partner.

Dakota has buried his woes in a dark temperament, and far too often, whatever drink he can afford at the local tavern. It isn’t until Tempest comes into his life that he starts to allow the dark clouds around him to lighten. He wouldn’t call himself an alcoholic, because he can function well no matter the drink, but the amount he imbibes still worries Tempest.

Dakota is slow to let others into his heart, but once they are, he protects them fiercely. He won’t admit it, but he’s accustomed to caring for others, and he’s a bit of a mother-hen to those he cares about. His journey to discover what faith truly is, and the definition of family, is one of the core themes of the series. 

Dakota was inspired by my desire to create an asexual character, specifically one who struggled with the same feelings of confusion about their sexuality that I struggled with in the past. Some of his experiences reflect my own, so he’s very near and dear to my heart.

Season 3 Character Highlights - 3 Things

Character: Carlos Reyes

Favorite 3 scenes:

3x08 “In the Unlikely Case of an Emergency”: We got our first “I love you” From Carlos to TK, we saw him try to get through to TK, penetrate the cloud around him. Then we have the airport scenes – watching the plane landing, running onto the tarmac, lifting TK almost off his feet. The vulnerability in the tarmac scene was so powerful to see. For a guy that has always had a lock on outwardly showing his emotions, he wasn’t able to in that moment, and it was beautiful.

3x13 “Riddle of the Sphinx”: No one will ever love TK Strand as much as Carlos, just like no one will ever love Carlos like TK. But watching Carlos coming to terms with not being the primary person to help the most important person in his life was both uncomfortable and beautiful at the same time. The scenes were hard, the emotions were uncomfortable, but the love and acceptance in these scenes were so amazing to watch. – The dinner table scene is my favorite part, the way TK forces the conversation instead of running away, the way Carlos lays his feelings out.

3x18 “A Bright and Cloudless Morning”: The way he looked away from TK after TK asked him to marry him, trying to figure out if he was dreaming or what. That scene is one of my favorites of both Season 3 and the series.

Favorite 3 lines: funny, heartfelt, or ridiculous

3x13 “Riddle of the Sphinx”: “Have fun. But not too much fun.” I know he was having an internal crisis, his brain was short circuiting, but I still laugh at this line. Like, dude, he is going to his 2nd meeting of the day, not a party. His expressions during the entire meeting of Cooper were priceless.

3x04 “Push”: “If I told him what was on my heart, it wouldn’t be very nice.” Carlos has a hard time with things that he has no control over, he knows he can’t make TK live, he doesn’t even really think TK wants him there. But, he sits there, staring at the man he loves, not thinking he can even touch him, hold his hand. It’s very telling that the thing he is most angry about is not being able to touch TK, if this truly was the end.

3x15 “Down to Clown”: “TK, that thing was on me and you didn’t say anything?” followed by “Do not say it crawled.” This whole scene was great, but watching him freak out over Lou was amazing. Seeing this normally calm and cool guy freaking out over the tiny lizard (not that I blame him) was hilarious.

Favorite 3 dynamics:

TK: I don’t have enough words to describe their dynamic, but magical is the one that comes to mind the most with them. We really lucked out on the casting for this show, and particularly with this couple. The way that Ronen & Rafa care about the characters is clear in every action they make.

Nancy, Marjan, & Grace: We really got to see Carlos with more than just TK or Tarlos centered scenes, and I loved each one he shared with these ladies. The way Nancy was supportive of both he and TK during the storm, the way Marjan called him out for the breakup/giving up – also parallels to his relationship with Michelle in S1. I loved 3x11 for the Carlos and Grace scenes, seeing them work together to get their power back was amazing.

Andrea: I loved how she didn’t listen to him about not coming to the hospital for him. The way her heartbreaks for her son and TK when he tells her they broke up, when she tells him that they love TK, you can see the relief in Carlos’ eyes, even though he wasn’t expecting the man to wake up. I need more Andrea Reyes in my life.

3 things we learned:

Vulnerability: I am not sure that we learned what his vulnerabilities are/were, but this was the first time really other than the end of 2x12 that we are allowed to see it, and see it we did. The scenes I chose as my favorites were all scenes where he was showing us what he was feeling, letting us see more than the perfect specimen that is Carlos Reyes. He had a lot of comedic moments too, but the vulnerable ones were my favorites.

Pet Limitations: When you live with TK Strand, you probably have to be somewhat specific on what constitutes a full meal, an acceptable pet, and when to take care of your groceries. I am with Carlos though, I prefer pets that you can actually pet (probably why I have 2 dogs & 5 cats).

Detective/Investigative Skills: It was nice seeing Carlos doing investigative work, things that were separate from TK (even though TK is 100% supportive, he isn’t the most helpful sidekick when it comes to solving mysteries). The man helped the detective solve the kidnapping (really he seemed to do most of the actual legwork), reviewed footage of the Capitol attack on Catherine (even though seeing the real culprit didn’t save them from the drugging), and figuring out who had made the swatting call with Grace & a little help from LAPD. They all showed us how intelligent and observant he is, how much he has learned to trust his instincts.

3 hopes for season 4:

More Reyes Family – I want more Reyes family info, is he an only child?

To have 1 season where he doesn’t have to sit at TK’s hospital bed. –I think that they may flip things on us with 4x08 and hurt Carlos instead of TK.

See more of his friendships with Marjan & Paul – I would be happy with any on screen info they give us about the trio, but I really head cannon that they were a big part of what got him through the break up.
