Dmitri Castellanos, The Smart Guy
Age: 12 (Born January 8th, 2008)
Race: Mixed (Hispanic and Caucasian)
Dmitri is a 6th grader at Maximillian Middle School in San Antonio, Texas. Throughout not only his own grade level but the entire school, Dmitri is known for his less-than-average height and his peculiar, eccentric personality. He wears mismatched clothes daily, can be found in the library anytime he doesn’t have to be somewhere else, and wears an oversized pair of headphones that the entire administration lets slide. The young boy has no quarrels about talking to or working with anyone, but he doesn’t have anyone he can truly call a friend. Most people believe that Dmitri is fine on his own and that their stares and sneers don’t bother him, since he’s never said so.
Dmitri’s mom left him and his father when he was around 2-years-old, making his memories of her vague and few. Since then, his father has struggled to pull himself together, let alone keep his son in check. Most days, Dmitri ensures his dad gets from the couch to his bed safely after work and that he has something to eat. The boy doesn’t complain about his caretaker job, but wishes he had a better relationship with his dad. The only thing keeping them close is that Mr. Castellanos doesn’t object to letting his son buy whatever books or movies he wants.
Dmitri has all the makings of a teenager who could get into trouble, but uses his situation to his advantage. Dmitri has taught himself many things, like how to cook easy dishes and figure out which breaker went off in the house. He’s visited several places in the city on his own, all in the name of making experiences for himself. He makes the best out of the independence he never asked for.
List three to five most important things about your character:
Dmitri, being of the curious kind, likes to educate himself. In his opinion, there is no such thing as knowing too much or learning about too many things. Even at such a young age, he recognizes the benefits in knowing everything from how to change a tire to what the smallest country in Europe is. Knowledge is power and he desperately wants to keep getting stronger.
Perhaps because of his quest to know it all, Dmitri has difficulty focusing on one subject for an extended time. His school records have him labeled as ADHD, with directions for all his teachers to ensure he has reminders to stay on task. Dmitri needs stimulation constantly, even when he’s absorbed in reading or watching something. Otherwise, his thoughts are all over the place and he amounts to less than he hoped for.
If the massive headphones didn’t give it away, Dmitri is heavily invested in music. It is one of the methods he uses to keep himself in the zone and avoid distractions. Dmitri doesn’t like what is currently on the charts, but instead listens to mostly 80′s music, especially 80′s rock. He fell in love with the genre after going through his dad’s collection of CDs.
Diagnosed at 10, Dmitri has Type 1 diabetes and always wears a insulin pump that monitors his sugar levels. He’s attempted to make checking it himself and getting refills a routine, but he sometimes forgets about it entirely. Luckily, the nurse keeps replacement pumps and sugary snacks for him in her office, just in case.
Something everyone notices about Dmitri from the start is how transparent he seems to be. He says what he’s thinking, acts how he feels is appropriate, and treats everyone how he believes they deserve to be treated.
Build/Body Type/Physical Frame:
Dmitri is scrawny and fragile, a known offender for getting games in P.E. cut short because he got hurt somehow.
Skin: Dmitri is light complected, though displays mostly Hispanic features. (Tyler Posey’s skin is an accurate depiction)
Hair: Messy brown hair, no real style to it.
Other defining features/extra anatomy:
Dmitri’s insulin pump is sometimes visible through his shirt, most often the wire peeking through.
Daydreams like nobody’s business
Likes animals a lot, probably prioritizes them too much
Knows the most random, obscure things
insists on being with someone at all times (Mateo is like this too, but they can’t be together alone, the cowards)
Wears glasses, but only puts them on when he wants to research something
Squints a lot (because of the aforementioned)
Tends to hold himself (ex. arms around his legs when sitting)
Because he’s so low to the ground, Dmitri tiptoes around carefully when around others, since they might not notice him. When comfortable, he tends to hop or skip around instead of taking normal sized steps. He doesn’t bother trying to stand tall anymore.
Dmitri’s voice is high and squeaky, very much what could be expected from one of the youngest 6th graders in the school.
As mentioned prior, Dmitri wears whatever he wants and it usually doesn’t match. At all. He’s most infamous for dressing like an actual elf before the last Christmas break, with long socks, a Santa hat, and pointed shoes.
