What inspired your character’s names?

A tag game

I was tagged by @ravenpuffwriter to share my inspiration for my character‘s names.

The SOLE Project

Well, the gang’s names were taken from irl friends I had. I’ve thought about changing them over the years, but I realized it still kind of worked with Agau’s motives. She wanted to take bland, simple names (Christian, Beth, Matt) and claim them for her own. Plus, none of them have last names, which is an interesting detail that kind of dehumanizes them.

Barbara Agau I had to name on my own. Her first name came from something I read about how “Barbara” derives from the Latin “barbarous” meaning “strange” or “foreign.” Agau came from the Spanish word “agua” with a few letters switched around, because I took 5 years of Spanish and middle school me is not creative.

I did just find out that Agau is a Marathi word meaning “arrogant” or “smart,” though, so that’s an amazing coincidence.

TREE Series

Ashlyn Rose Gentum came from the need to have an A R Gentum name, because her nickname is Silver and argentum is Latin for Silver. 

Zachary Oren Loto came from the Russian word for Gold, zoloto. Because I knew their nicknames would be Silver and Gold long before I actually had names for them, so I played around with languages until I came up with unique last names.

I don’t actually remember where Director Rush’s name came from. And I still haven’t named my villain.

Ah, crap. I think I’m writing the same character twice.

By which I mean it just struck me that Dr. Agau (SOLE) and Director Rush (Head of TREE) are very. very similar.

Sigh.

"Bloop", says my-words-are-light with the same voice as Aurelion Sol, the Star Forger Dragon.

Uhh. Hello, giant dragon. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

Very few TREE workers have ever met a dragon and lived to tell the tale; mostly they just leave them be (as long as they’re not you know destroying cities).

That being said, Director Rush is one of those few.

Your bloop is the fact that Director Rush was brought to TREE by her father. He was an Oceanic worker, and so that was her division as well.
