I honestly don't understand how you can view the Villies as anything but toxic at this point.
Grian straight up says that he and Gem don't listen to Pearl. They constantly disrespect her, question her loyalty and complain about the things she does.
They've made alliances without Pearl even being there, but when someone wants to talk to Pearl alone they immediately become insanely overprotective of her.
The only time they show any real care for her is when she's a boogie and she can give them something they want (an excuse to kill people).
Their whole dynamic is toxic to its core.
