This is a little draft of a short story I did last month called ‘Born without wings’. Don’t mind the cover as that was done three months ago, hence the outdated appearance. Yes this was done on Canva, I used it to plan out how I wanted the pages to look. I’ve never illustrated a book digitally before, so the writing and story was actually improvised AFTER I drew some of the pages, which was a rookie mistake. If you notice the lack of flow in my writing thats probably why. Anyways I’m just gonna dump it here so I can see how it looks, and to see how I can improve the current one I’m creating, which is actually being written and storyboarded first lol.

hey, i was wondering about what is the 'relaxed position' for wings on a human character. is it withdrawn close? or extended?

It would be closed! Think about how birds are relaxed. Their wings aren’t spread, but rather folded against their bodies. Think about it like how your relaxed position for your arms is at your side and not stretched out on either side of you.

Hi! About characters with wings, would wings be able to successfully shield a person behind them from another's vision? I was trying to figure it out but there wasn't much that I could find.

If they’re big enough and both people are crouched down, I think. Because of wing anatomy, just holding their wing out in front of someone would make it easy for the other person to just see their legs.

Hi! So I'm writing a character with wings, and your post helped a lot :) But the issue is, this character needs to hide his wings--no one can know that he has them, as no one is supposed to know the truth about what kind of creature he is. I thought about a spell like "Disguise self" in DnD, but with that sort of magic, the wings are still there, just not visible. Unfortunately that doesn't really work here. But I'm unsure of the mechanics of retractable wings.... Help?

There is no such thing as retractable wings in mammals, but with beetles there’s this outer coating that hides the wings like this:

It would be a little morbid with a human, but perhaps you could pull it off.

If you don’t want to do that, you can have your character hide the wing with clothing.

The main character in my book book hides his wing under a heavy coat. In my universe, a lot of people have wings and he just has to hide the fact that they’re angel wings, so nobody questions the bulge that the wing makes on his back. However, if that’s an issue in your world, you can have your character put on a backpack to hide it.

Hey so um. I have a character who has wings, and he's the only person in the world with them. Is there a possibly logical explanation as to why? Sorry. And also, do you know something that could cause a mutation in someone? (Ily by the way. I saw you on Pinterest and I'm happy your blog is still here.

So I’m going to get a little sciency on you here, and will relay my information from Honors Biology two years ago unto you.

Mutations or differences in genes usually occur in meiosis, which is the division of sex cells. Unlike with mitosis, in meiosis the cell divides twice and the resulting sex cells (eggs and sperm) only have half the amount of chromosomes that normal cells have so that the two can combine and create a complete cell.

However, some things may go wrong during the meiosis process. It’s how some people wind up with one extra or one less chromosome than they need, or some chromosomes don’t function properly, and it’s the cause for many of the genetic disorders we know today.

When the chromosomes change around or are arranged abnormally, it’s a mutation, so if your character was to grow wings, it would be a result from a chromosomal mutation that he received from his mom and dad.

Perhaps someone can substitute some of the chromosomes/genes for bird chromosomes (?) during the meiosis process and that’s how he winds up with wings?

I’m sorry for the kind of shitty explanation; idk shit about bullshitting science,  I’m more of a person who yells “BECAUSE MAGIC, THAT’S WHY” and calls it a day.
