Hey there, love your breakdowns of Mewtwo details and lore! I find the aesthetic and design of Mewtwo’s castle and lab just the right balance of cool and unnerving. Particularly with the Pokemon cloning machine: seems like there’s alot to unpack there.
A production sketch shows what we for the most part see in the movie, except that last part of the test tube. Seems like in early concepts the clones were extracted a different way? What might this imply for how Mewtwo views the new lives he creates? Any idea on what this gooey miracle matter might be? Mewtwo must be a master chemist…
Hi @whitephoenix52! Thank you for the insightful questions!
If I’m understanding your questions correctly, this is the part of the production sketch we’re referring to (please let me know if I’m wrong):
This seems to be the exit for the newborn clones, though as you note, it looks like originally the tubes detach from the base and the clone emerges while inside some sort of bubble. Very similar to a Pokemon being in a Pokeball, or even reminiscent of Mew sleeping underwater within its barrier.
I think this may have been changed in the film to up the creepiness factor. Mewtwo’s clones emerge from the tubes through some kind of rubbery artificial womb, which both looks and sounds unsettling.
In the narrative, though, perhaps Mewtwo doesn’t want his clones exploding out of a clinical stasis tube upon their birth like he did. Not only was it messy, but it left Mewtwo feeling disoriented. With this setup, maybe Mewtwo is ensuring his clones are born calm and ready to follow orders...but perhaps he also wants them to have at least some semblance of a “natural” birth.
As for what that gooey substance is, I have no idea. Mewtwo is able to invent so many new technologies, it's pretty amazing!
