As Charles Archer explained to his father, accommodation took some effort:

Davie . . . considers the Black as the hereditary owner of the soil and that it is an act of injustice to drive him from his hunting grounds – at the same time punishing and case of sheep stealing or petty theft when the culprit can be got hold of. The result has been that the Blacks here appear to have acquired some idea of the rights of property, and this tribe, so far from doing any injury, are of the greatest assistance in procuring bark, breaking up ground with the hoe, carrying rations to the sheep stations &c. &c. . . . They see us approach the camp without alarm, and I have been present at several of their Coroberees, or dances, and the other day at a Bullanbullan, or fight, without interrupting their proceedings.
