Strange Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
by Charles Marsh
The unusual title of this book is taken from a sermon Dietrich Bonhoeffer preached in London in 1933: "It is a strange glory, the glory of this God."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer has long interested me. Though a Christian pastor, he was hanged for treason in a Nazi concentration camp just weeks before the Allies liberated the camp. I was interested to learn how the privileged son of a prominent Berlin family was transformed from a gifted student of theology who believed in the superiority of the fatherland to a conspirator who plotted against Hitler.
The biographer did a commendable job of covering Bonhoeffer's spiritual journey and his struggle with his conscience—and his God—as he contemplated joining a group of conspirators and becoming a double agent. However, the author also takes pains to explain in great detail the evolution of Bonhoeffer's religious philosophy over the course of his life, and since I have no interest in—and very little patience with—theology, the chapter on his college years put me to sleep—literally.
The last chapter was difficult to read. Though I knew he'd been hanged for treason, knowing it is one thing; reading the details of his imprisonment, torture, and death is quite another.
Much of what I'd read previously about Bonhoeffer turned out to be wrong. This is an excellent biography, one that delves into who the man really was, but one which requires quite an investment of time.
