Be Nice To Your Friends

My good friend Busuu really loves to teach me to be mean to people, so much so I made a whole post about it -- and I've learned even more since then! But sometimes (rarely) it also teaches some nice things to say about people. Here are a few:

lieb und teuer - near and dear in Mode - fashionable, in vogue still - quiet lebhaft - lively, loud mutig - brave nett - nice freundlich - friendly sympathisch - likeable charmant - charming hilfsbereit - helpful, accomodating höflich - polite ehrlich - honest lustig - funny berühmt - famous klug - clever, wise gelernt - skilled pünktlich - punctual geduldig - patient heile - healthy, healed praktisch - practical geehrt - honored, venerated toll - great, amazing genau - exactly, precisely, that's right Weiter so! - Keep it up! Gut gemacht! - Well done! Pass auf dich auf! - Stay safe! Fahrt bitte vorsitig! - Please drive carefully! Ich bezahle - I'll pay

And of course, if you find someone with all those qualities who says all those nice things to you, they might just be ausgedacht - imaginary!

The Charm. [French Folk Traditions.]

The "charm" is a spell which allows one to enchant a person, an animal or a thing through written or oral words, "in verse, in rhythm or in prose", as recalled by Abbot Thiers in the 17th century, who gives some examples : "To stop or make horses, carriages, carts, coaches or carts run, by reciting certain words, or by writing them on a place through which they must pass."

Charm is also widely used in love spells and will remain in its vocabulary : we are charmed by a person we like, we fall under their spell. (…) Ethnographic collections from the 19th century report gestures and magical formulas used in all kinds of situations and for different effects.

Laisnel de La Salle lists in 1875 several "charm prayers", such as that which serves to charm firearms, but also the "fire prayer", which suddenly stops the most intense blaze ; the "water prayer" which puts a brake on the fury of the waves ; the "wolf prayer" by means of which one can send his sheep to graze without a shepherdess. He adds that these "prayers are hardly transmitted except from father to son / from mothers to daughters and on the bed of death; which means that a large number of them are already lost.”
