Okay I finally got my 2DS working and someone’s old game collection, and I’ve been so focused on that I completely forgot I started drawing this guy and only now finished it.

X-sponge: I’ll give you my medal, if you can beat me in a b*ttle!

This is a Yo-kai concept that really takes advantage of me setting my stuff in the current year. Here’s a modern Yo-kai for a modern problem, that being the whole “I can’t say that on Tumblr, or Reddit, or real life! I’d get banned on TikTok!” phenomenon. He’s responsible for the strange argots people use so they aren’t immediately stamped out by the watchful eyes of the automatic moderation.

I originally designed this as “Ahhterisk” and he was going to be an asterisk shaped relative of Runsure, but it turns out ahh as ass is just AAVE and not actually self censorship. So I removed the center prongs and made him an X for the “expunge” pun.

I also took the opportunity to make him a stamp now that he was an X because spongy stamps are a thing if I recall correctly and now he can stamp an X things. Also the program I use has paint brushes with the texture of real paint and I wanted to try it for once.

The eye was originally intended as his eye, but I thought it would be funnier if it watching him, making sure he never gets a moment of peace to be not sqeaky clean. Which is ironic, because he’s a stamp.

Classic Yo-kai, Part 1

So, Classic Yo-kai are probably the easiest to make. They’re literally the yōkai from legends. You just go onto yokai.com or get a book about yōkai and draw anything you find that Yo-kai Watch hasn’t done. There are, like, six that aren’t because they’re evos or recolors of actual yōkai and three that gijinka them because the original yōkai was a shapeshifter but I probably won’t be doing any of that.

This was actually how I started making fankai all the way back in middle school. I had these notebooks of my own Yo-kai Watch OCs, and they were all just Classic Yo-kai because they were so easy to make. Nowadays, I try to limit how many Classic Yo-kai I have. I've learned to like making new characters based on obscure yōkai. I can teach people about them but I don’t have to have a battle monster that gives you scrub typhus, and I get to show off my own designing chops.

I was originally gonna do one from each tribe here, but there’s actually a limit on how many pictures you can post on mobile and I wanted to get specifically Seto-taishō out there because I like him. None of these are actually from Shikoku, and one of these is explicitly not from Shikoku, but like, travel is possible.

Ms. Fox

This is probably the only time I’m gonna do an evo who is just the original Yo-kai after the time skip, and Krystal Fox was chosen so I can do funny GOAT Washed jokes.

There really isn’t much else to her beyond “Wouldn’t it be funny if Krystal Fox’s career went to shit and she had to work like a normal person?”. Those kind of concept inversion evolutions are always really fun to see. I like to think Fusasa (Fiona, not Furdinand) is sitting at the top of the charts, saw her Inspiriting someone working at a venue, and just kinda smugly smiled.

I did put in a couple fun physical traits. The tag says her Japanese name, Kon-san, because in Samureel and Sighborg Y can do it, she can too. I also gave her three tails, because she’s Kon-san, and “san” means three as you probably know. The name itself is just the original name, Kon-tan, with the honorific swapped. The original pun still works.

Mx. Enmingle

every time I look back at this face I flinch a little. that means I did it right.

So it’s almost the end of Pride Month, and I’ve got nothing to show for it so far. All prospective girlfriends for my characters are still indev, so best I’ve got is this new Fankai who’s pun revolves around being non-binary.

See, I’ve been watching a lot of Phineas and Ferb lately and I had the song “Mix and Mingle Machine” and it has that part that’s just “Mix. Mingle. Mix. Mingle.” and I had that part running in my head for a while until I ended up coming up with this.

So this one’s joke is entirely “Forced social interaction is scary”. They’re literally a revenant lurching towards you, but all they want is to be friends, but that in and of itself is treated as just as scary as a normal revenant. I’m surprised there wasn’t a “no personal space” Yo-kai back in 3.

I started writing Soultimates in the bio card instead of a second description, since this one has a gimmick. Rather than passively boost befriend rates with an ability like the Popularity Yo-kai, Mx. Enmingle boosts odds with their Soult, like in Wib Wob. However, unlike in Wib Wob, Mx. Enmingle deals major damage with their Soult as well, creating a bit of risk and reward, since if you knock the opponent out you can’t use a wisp if you get it later, or spam Rushed Meeting to crank up the odds. If you forget to pin the right opponent, they could even end up befriending the wrong guy instead!

Tanuki Suit

I actually don’t mind that Yo-kai Watch never really did much with tanuki. It’s good to have the lesser guys get a chance for a change. However, I happened to land my story right where TANUKI ROYALTY lives so I gotta do some tanuki stuff.

Most actual tanuki from folktales are just “(gimmick)-danuki” and I’ll probably pump out a few of those as Classic Yo-kai if I feel like it, but wanted to do one who was a Modern Yo-kai with a modern gimmick. I landed on “public relations” because of how cute tanuki are portrayed, and then realized I could do a nice Mario 3 pun as well. It’s Tanuki Suit, like the suit Mario wears, but also “suit worn by a tanuki”, “corpo suit who is a tanuki” and of course “tanuki lawsuit”.
