A happy fourth of july everyone and to celebrate, I present my very first Natlan redesign and it's Chasca 💜❤️🌌! This redesign was one I approached with caution and planning, especially because I don't do latin inspired character designs very often😅. But in the end, it came out so beautiful and honestly is one of my favorites that I have done so far😍.
Redesign notes 📝 🎨:
While there is more of Natlan coming up and after some thinking on who would be first, Chasca was an obvious choice. It was mainly because her design was all over place to me and she had a lot of dark colors😵💫. That surprised me, especially because I feel the latin culture is very colorful so I knew I wanted to put more color on her🤔. Also, similar to Sumeru, I felt I did not see much peruvian nor salavdor in her design.
An advantage with Chasca is when I looked at her model, I noticed how the scarf component looked like cowboy pants so I immediately had an idea where to go with the look. The plan was the bottom would have warm colors ♥️while the top had cooler colors like purple💜. Also, I felt that the color balance made sense as a reference to Chas'ka, the incan goddess of dusk and dawn 🌌which the character is based on.
While I figured out the bottom, I needed to figure out what the top would be so I did concept art, playing around with ponchos, capes and more.
After that, Chasca got a quechmatl, which is a garment from Mexican culture (by the way, I found that out AFTER drawing the outfit. Would not be the first time I got a culture mixed up cough cough Tighnari 😅). With the top figured out, I also added peruvian symbols to the top. The diamond one, Estrella, means "star" while the other symbol, pajaro, means "bird" or "parrot" as a reference to Chasca's clan with the name "flower feather" and being raised by bird saurians.
Speaking of the quacasuars, I noticed feather details on her design like the bracelet and cape and I thought maybe they are connected to her feathered family. So, I put feathers on her gloves and quacasuar feathers on her hat too. I even gave her pink facepaint resembling the markings and beak of the quacasuars.
However, the colors were the main concern since I wanted it to be balanced and I had to move some things around. For example, I moved her bracelet and made it to a necklace instead and the feathers on the cape were changed to pink to stand out from the purple. I also noticed some redesigns had white on her and I really liked that so I made I added white to her hat, boots and gave her a white blouse.
Also, she has a natlan flower on her hat which is also a reference to Chas'ka, hence her being goddess of flowers 💐.
While this redesign was tricky and definitely was not easy with the colors, it came out so beautiful in the end. And to add more color, I used paint markers to make them pop out more. Can't wait to do another natlan redesign in the future. Any suggestions I am open for it.
A happy fourth of July everyone ☺️ 🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇
