It was raining the next morning. 

A rare enough event out here, surrounded by dust and rocks and the sort of hardy plants that could handle an overabundance of sunlight and a lack of moisture, and Kerry found himself wondering how long it would last. All morning? All day? Would it sizzle in the air once the clouds had moved away, steam in the return of sunlight? Was it less toxic, less prone to causing irritation than the sort of rain they got back in the city?

Hard to imagine, and he knew he was only focusing on these questions he had no real interest in to avoid thinking about anything else. 

A shift on the cot beside him and his fingers resumed their motions on the expanse of bared back beneath them. Let his eyes flutter shut when V snuggled closer, felt his warm breath against his neck in rhythm with the rise and fall of his chest, and decided he was…grateful. Grateful that his partner had gotten any sleep at all after his revelations, after his stunted attempts to explain himself. 

As if he owed Kerry any explanation. 

He could see it, he guessed. Could trace V's logic, knowing as he did the way Kerry felt about Johnny, their history, the things they'd shared. Maybe didn't have the whole story, maybe only really had whatever he'd gleaned from Johnny's engram, but he knew enough. 

Knew enough to know he'd loved him, to know at least a little how it must've felt to lose him. 

"I lost him long before that tower went down, V."

"I know."

Kerry bit at his lip, holding back a laugh as his eyes stung. Hadn't thought he'd have much left to give, after last night.  Couldn't remember the last time he'd cried like that, hard and messy and embarrassing if he hadn't been so caught up in the moment. Not that V would've judged him any -- then or now. So maybe that was why it was easy to let go again, to stop fighting it, though he did try to keep it down for V's sake. 

"Hey."

Well. 

"Hey," he replied, voice thick, and he swallowed hard. 

V didn't say anything, just shifted against him until he could cup his cheek with one hand. 

"D'you wanna talk about it?" he whispered, and this time Kerry did laugh. Because the fact was? They hadn't talked much, last night. Kerry couldn't find his words, couldn't translate all the things he'd been feeling into something coherent, and V, V was never one to push. Had just held him close and let him get it out, that inarticulate grief, wave after wave, kept him steady through the torrent. 

"I don't know what to say," he admitted, reaching up to swipe at his eyes. "I don't know how to say… to even begin…" He shook his head, biting his lip again and taking a deep, shuddering breath. "I'm just… I'm so fucking angry, V. I'm so angry with him. And I have been for such a long time, and it never seems to make a damn difference, whether he's there or not." 

Fresh tears hot down his cheeks and V patiently wiped them away, rough pad of his thumb somehow soothing against his skin. Familiar. Grounding. 

Affectionate.

Freely given, no games or gimmicks, the way love should've been, the way Johnny could never have managed even if he had admitted to some sort of non-platonic feeling for him.

Chasing Storms, pt 15, Interlude V

He was always aware in V's dreams. 

Fragmented, fractured things that they were, and the first few times he hadn't known what to make of them. Vivid in some instances, indistinct in others, and it was difficult for him to tell which pieces were real, reimagined remnants of V's own memories, and which pieces were so twisted through the brain's bizarre filters that every day things were stitched together into something unsettling. 

He'd asked him about them, once: about the nightmares, about how they seemed to be getting worse. V had only frowned, shook his head, and told him he didn't often remember the things he dreamed. 

Whatever was going on when the other man slept, it was almost exclusively Johnny's to experience. 

They weren't all nightmare hellscapes, at least: there was some good there, too, some mundane and ordinary snapshots of less troubled times. Sparks against the dark and for all most of them were boring Johnny couldn't exactly pretend he didn't prefer them. Sometimes he saw things from V's perspective; most of the time he was a specter, an intangible observer, watching as various scenes unfolded, bled together, tangling from whatever had triggered them in V's waking hours. 

And here, at least, V's memories seemed untouched by the Relic's influence. 

Gotta be, Johnny thought as he leaned back against the bed of a pickup truck, gaze drawn up towards star-strewn skies so clear that even without the cornfields surrounding them he could've guessed they were nowhere near Night City -- or any city, for that matter. Flat expanse as far as the eye could see, and he wondered what state this memory was from. Midwest, maybe, back when V had been younger, still with the Nomad family that had raised him, and he vaguely remembered the kid mentioning having originally come from back East. New York? Sounded right, with that accent. 

A shift, Johnny witnessing this past event through V's eyes this time, and he took in the sight of the other young man sprawled beside him. Jamie. Tan skin a touch lighter than V's own, hair a cap of wayward brown curls, a smile that dimpled both cheeks. From a time before V started making his way west with his family, a connection formed over years he'd spent in this place, with a boy that had been his first for so many things. Johnny could feel the affection V had had, could feel that warmth buzzing through him like alcohol without the dulling side effects, and knew this memory wasn't tainted by him any. 

Johnny's memories were hardly ever this genuinely sweet, because Johnny himself had never been particularly sweet -- certainly not like this, not like the V of years past, some ridiculous combination earnest farm boy and the boy next door. Wasn't sure how much of it was accurate, how much of it was tinted through a rosy lens, though from what he knew of present-day V, it wasn't too far off the mark. This version just seemed stripped back, lacking the inner fire Johnny knew the kid actually had, cravings for challenges and excitement --

--or maybe it was there. A feeling beneath the warmth of something else, something conflicted, of longing and regret and determination, lamentation for a course already chosen, and yeah, Johnny could feel it now: this place, even this boy to a degree, would always be special to V.

They just wouldn't be enough. 

One last night under the stars, pretending their dreams weren't going to pull them in very different directions.

The panzer was a lot bigger up close.

He'd seen it in the distance, neatly parked in its custom-made, free-standing "garage" of sorts, and somehow it being under wraps like that had made it harder to contextualize its actual size. Standing right next to it though, Kerry could only think the same thing over and over: 

This thing is fucking huge.

"Havin' second thoughts?" 

The voice belonged to Carol, one of the vets V was particularly good friends with and who his partner had spent many hours the past few evenings chatting about tech-heavy shit Kerry couldn't begin to understand. He guessed she was nice enough, under that no punches pulled, no-nonsense tolerated air she projected, though he wasn't too sure she was very keen on him. Hadn't asked V about it, unsure how much of his misgivings were projection, how much of it sprang from his own sense of being out of place, out of step, out of touch with the sorts of lives these people led. No one had said anything to him -- no scoffing that he knew of, no condescension for the rich guy slumming it out in the boonies with his much-younger input. The sort of shit he didn't care about back home, things he'd been so certain he had made his peace with, cropping up here and now and it wasn't too hard to piece together why after those first few days. 

Kerry had never been the kind of guy you brought home to meet the family. Had rarely experienced the whole "these are my parents" thing in either direction -- he'd fucked off from his own home at sixteen and had never looked back, and the sorts of relationships he'd had over the course of his life weren't exactly built to last, certainly not long enough to reach that point. The last time he'd done anything remotely like this had been with his ex-wife, and he gave exactly zero fucks what his former in-laws thought of him, then or now. 

But these people weren't painful reminders of his own parents, of the sort of life he'd broken away from the moment he could. And maybe they weren't V's relatives in a blood-shared sort of sense, but if he'd learned anything at all about Nomads and family it was that blood had little to do with it. 

Their bonds were just as strong, possibly stronger, because they were forged from choice rather than chance. And maybe deep down, Kerry wanted them to like that V had chosen him, too.

"Just wondering why everything has to be so big," he quipped in response to Carol's question, and he felt some of that nervous tension ease when she laughed. 

"Says the man who lives amongst skyscrapers."

"Eh, its all relative."

All the students started getting up from their seats and leaving the room. "Remember class in 35 minutes!" Mr. Welsh yells as they all push themselves outside.

With Harry still on his shoulder, gripping his t-shirt and a couple strands of hair in his hand to keep him from falling off, Niall to his right, Zayn and Liam to his left, they all agree that,

"Shit. This is bad."

Or

When a supposed ‘threat’ is running around school, and sends the school into lockdown, Louis, Harry, Niall, Liam and Zayn can’t keep their noses to themselves, and is determined to eliminate the threat with the help of eachother.
