High rolling in France
Following our downtime in San Sebastián we left Hannah and headed for Biarritz in France to pick up our hire car. We were pleased when we arrived to find we had been upgraded to a little Mercedes Benz! High rolling in France!
We cruised up the country side to Bordeaux where we found our chateau or should I say Castle! The place was amazing. We all felt a bit embarrassed to be carrying our packs to our rooms as it was so fancy and I think Louis Vuitton luggage may have been more appropriate. The rooms were HUGE and so nice… We were loving it.
Since it was such a lovely day we decided to go and lay by the pool and soak up some last rays of sunshine. The pool was incredible and backed onto a massive lawn/bush that was all part of the property.
Following our relaxing afternoon we decided to head into the town for a wine tasting or two.
The first palace we stumbled across was an Australian man from Adelaide who had been living in the Bordeaux region for 12 years. He gave us a fabulous Sauvignon Blanc to try.. We were all quite nervous to we how much a bottle would be but were very surprised when he said €9! We were in! We then tried a delicious dessert wine as will… This one was a bit more on the pricey side at €19 but we were feeling rich and purchased it.
We found a nice little bar with plenty of seats outside which we decided to sit at and indulge in a bottle of wine and some cheeses.
Feeling quite tipsy at this point we felt another wine tasting was in order. We tried some very average wines from Santorini and Syria… We were feeling the effects from the wine by this point and were roped into purchasing the Syrian wine, along with a red from the Bordeaux region.
We stumbled across a cute little restaurant and decided to go in. Courtenay and I were feeling adventurous and decided to get salmon for our entree, followed by duck and finishing with cheeses. Of course we were feeling rich and all decided to order a aperitif which was a delicious refreshing cocktail. Dinner cost us €100 each but it was so worth it!
Luckily they sat us upstairs away from everyone as we got quite rowdy at dinner. This was undoubtedly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The duck was absolutely beautiful!
After dinner we decide to find a nice bar to entertain us. We walked into a massive square to find about 50 people line dancing with a live band. Very random! One person would walk out and do their dance and all the others would watch and learn the moves. This was far too tricky for us so we decided to pull out our trusty line dance. This lasted about 30 seconds but we were really into it!
When we arrived home, Pierre (our host) was waiting up for us. So cute!
As we settled into bed and were falling asleep, Josh and Kim bursted into our room stating that their door had opened and there was a bat in their room. We looked at them in disbelief, next minute a bat was flying around our room!
The next morning we awoke and went to one of the many dining rooms for breakfast. There was a full spread on for us including croissants, fresh bread, pastries etc. Heaven, we were in heaven!
We decided to drive into Bordeaux and have a little loom around and get some supplies for our picnic we wanted. Bordeaux was quite big and full of shops. We didn’t stay long (long enough to get a tuna baguette though) as we needed to get back to the chateau to meet Pierre for our vineyard tour.
Pierre was great. He showed us right around the property and explained how the wine was made etc. so interesting and really nice as the property has been in his wife’s family for 600 years and his son runs the vineyard.
After the tour he showed us into a room for a wine tasting. The most delicious red wine I’ve tasted I bunk! We got a couple of bottles to takeaway with us.
Following our wine tasting and usual afternoon swim we packed up our picnic and went for a little wander to find a spot. We spent about 4 hours on our picnic just chilling and drinking wine. So nice. It’s fair to say that currently we are winning at life!
Bordeaux was amazing. Such a nice place to come with a family so hurry up and come and visit us Gilchrist and Neutgens families we can go back there!
